My brother and I are planning on a 76 archery elk hunt for this fall. I was hoping some of you guys might have some input. I know that some of the units to the north are getting hammered this winter, but don't know if 76 is looking any better. I'd love to hear what some of you guys that have spent time in the unit have to say about it. We will be backpacking in and have already gotten some good info on possible trail heads to try, but would certainly love some more. Would also love to hear anyone's 76 hunting stories. Thanks

I spent a good bit of time in the northern part of unit 76 many moons ago when I was scouting & hunting sheep. At that time it was loaded with elk, but after sheep hunting I never went back.

This was my first elk hunt and it was solo in 1970. I hunted Pole mountain, on top. That wasn't necessary. Spent the night up there in snow storm without a tent. Elk up high and at base of mountain. I remember seeing the largest cow elk up top. I still have not seen a cow elk that large yet again. Of course that was about 47 years ago. It was almost impossible to climb Stony Pass at 12600. Today you can drive a car across in two wheel drive. Not much help to you but I would love to hunt it again. I think I would scout the west side of the unit before the lake.
