What I read was SS109 and M885 types with designed in extra penetrating/piercing features are being considered for a reclassification from for sporting purposes to armor piercing or penetrating, effectively imposing a ban. Steel cores possibly? I think their concern is alleged ability to defeat law enforcement body armor, not sure about that part. So it is not clear to me if this is a legit issue and an attepmt to protect LE officers or a concocted reason to hide behind so they can ban some ammo. Maybe someone in LE would know.

SS109 & M885 are the same rounds, one is a NATO classification and the other is the US designation. They have steel core bullets for piercing capabilities. I don't have any personally, ;)

Any 223 round is going to defeat standard LE body armour...what they are trying to do is slowly but surely make getting ammo for any type of "bad gun" hard or impossible to get.

Yep, next up will be a limit on grain of bullet saying they impart too much force when hitting a target...complete BS

Exactly right. Doesn't matter if it has a green tip or not. It has absolutely nothing to do with keeping cops safe. That's just what they want you to think when really it's just another stepping stone against 2A. They did the same thing with 7N6 surplus ammo for the 5.45x39. If you're not familiar with that, it's the AK74. Another gun this administration loves to hate. It's only a matter of time before 7.62x39 ammo is on the chopping block. They've already banned the importation of many Russian AK rifles. And let's not forget, they also recently tried to ban body armor for civilian use.

purely a political move. the SS109/M885 isn't the first 5.56 round to go through this. A couple years ago the ATF made a ruling that the Barnes Solid Copper round was armor piercing. That ruling is still being challenged in the courts by Barnes and the NSSF. The sad part is it's guilty until proven innocent. Barnes had to pull that bullet (no pun intended) from the market while they wait for new hearings and hopefully a new finding. The same could happen with the SS109/M885. I checked with a few of our distributors the day after this latest announcement and 3 of 4 were sold out of it. I've also noticed folks already jacking the price up on it.

Nailed it. Police armor is for short bore, hand gun defense.

You are right Scott. The standard "patrolman" body armour is for effective defense against pistols, but when you start talking about center fire rifles they are no longer bullet proof, unless the officer bought the hard breast plate to insert into it.

The body armor that we wore stopped all the handgun rounds, except an occassional 125 gr. JHP out of my 6" Colt Python. Any typical round fired out of a rifle will defeat most LE body armor. We shot the crap out of samples and some of our old vests when we bought new ones. We couldn't talk anyone into wearing them when we did so though. Maybe if we found one of those guys wearing flannel and longjohns with no teeth.

There is a video out there somewhere of a guy wearing armor and getting shot point blank. Needless to say it doesn't go well.

I had to try out a vest with a Five SeveN just to see what the fuss was about. Surpringly it stopped it until I hit about 1/4" from another spot is hit.
