Looking at a possible move UP that way...I'm a midwest whitetail hunter but looking to make the move to CO sometime in the near future maybe. Just wondering if anyone had some general info on the hunting up in there, not looking for your honey hole or anything...Just wondering about elk & mule deer numbers up in that area.

I live 30 miles south in Buena Vista. Hunting is good in this area. I manage to fill the freezer every year.

I wouldn't even consider moving to Leadville. It's a crap hole.

Thats a little harsh, don't you think? Just be prepared for some stout winters up there. Good hunting all around that area.

Leadville is like a lot of other SMALL Colorado towns, especially the ones high up in the mts. Harsh winters and not a lot of opportunities for shopping and other things you take for granted in larger communities. For example...don't know how far the closest WalMart is, but bet it's too damn far to drive to in the winter. Not saying WM is the greatest, but at least there is a pretty good selection. Before I retired I looked at real rural town that was over 50 miles to the nearest Doctor, shopping and normal conviences we take for granted. My point is choose wisely! Our whole county here in SW colorado has around 25,000 people with good Drs, hospitals, services and conviences for example.

Leadville is a crap hole. Great hunting around there but the town is a dump. Most people choose top live in BV or somewhere else around that area. There is a mine that just opened near Leadville and it is hiring. Pays pretty good.

I made a living for 4 years by calling on doctors in small towns all over the CO mountains. I've been in about every town in CO on or south of I-70, usually once or twice a month.

I would look farther south from Leadville, Buena Vista to Salida. Housing is more expensive than you might think.

In the SW part of the state, Durango is a great town. I would also consider Woodland Park, 30 minutes west of CO Springs at 8,500 ft. In the west-central part of CO, Glenwood Springs is another town I like. Those towns might be bigger than you want but you can choose smaller towns not far away.

The CO Div of Wildlife has loads of stats on their site, which is the best state game and fish site in the western states. Just look up the harvest statistics for 2011 to get an idea of deer and elk numbers.

I know several nice people in Leadville, but I believe there are "cleaner areas" nearby. Had a cousin live there several years and he definately got tired of winter up there.

I know nice people there too. They want to come to BV, but can't sell their home. They also bring their kids to school in BV.

I could live in Leadville easily, and I came close to doing it once, but I don't have a family to worry about. Just me and the dog.

My little paradise in unit 81 is for sale, could be turn key, complete with snowmobiles. Its 25ft to the national forest and good hunting. Alamosa is our shopping center and health center, only 47 miles. Chama is about 25 miles.
Health reasons

That sounds nice xtreme, that's my plan in about 25 more years. Hopefully Im still mountain able by the time I can afford it. Old Hunter- I would also pick BV or Salida over Leadville.
