So I had my plans for Wyoming 2015 all set out. I drew a unit 7 cow tag and put in first choice for antelope in unit 38. There have been more tags then first choice applicants in past years (roughly 120 tags for 100 applicants in 2014) and it overlaps my elk area. I have the Garmin landowner chip and ordered all the BLM maps for both the elk units and the antelope units and had them all marked up with public access points, HMA's, and walk ins. I had even tentatively secured private land in 38 pending the draw.
Then came the draw. For whatever reason, fish and game cut tags in unit 38 by 66%!!! Further compounding the problem.... there were 400% more first choice applicants in 38 this year!
Which brings me to where I am now. A proud owner of a unit 25 antelope tag. My 3rd choice fall back I never thought I'd actually see. There are clearly a lot of issues with public land access which I assume is why there are always leftover tags in this unit. I have the landowner chip and I will be ordering the maps on Monday. That said if anyone has hunted this unit before and has ANY advice they can give on this unit, I would GREATLY appreciate it as I have never stepped foot on it.
The only potential upside is I won't be up there until the 3rd week of the season (Oct 19th) so hopefully I will miss the mad rush for the few pieces of accessible public.
Feel free to PM me and thanks in advance for ANY advice you might be able to provide on this unit.
