Antelope unit 22

Hi all,
Not looking for info on 22, this will be my fourth trip there while building points again.
Just wondering if anyone else was hunting 22, 20 or 16 this year and might want to compare notes over coffee or dinner.
The post about eats in Buffalo is begging me to go see what the Winchester is like.

We are in area 16 with 3 tags a piece. As of right now we are staying in Buffalo. Drove through the area this summer on vacation, but still looking for any pointers. We are leaving Indiana on October 5, arrive there on the 6th, and plan on hunting the 7th through the 14th.

We will be right next door in unit 23. First time trying for Antelope so we will see how it goes, we might be crazy going opening day but it was the timing that worked for everyone. we will be camping on BLM but I am sure we will be in Buffalo several times throughout the week grabbing a bite to eat and trolling for info :)

We each have a buck tag and two doe tags so we have a tall order ahead of us to try and find some goats. Plan is to cover a bunch of ground and hit the smaller sections and maybe get lucky and run in to a landowner that would let us shoot a couple does if we can find em....

Maybe we will bump in to you guys at the Winchester, good luck!

Headed out last week in Sept. Expect to scout a day or two then hunt the "madhouse" opener. Probably spend a night or so at the Powder River campground and the rest on blm.
SuperHunter18, there has always been in the past a sizable WIA in unit 23 off the Schoonover Rd. Shortcut to it go south off 90 on the Dead Horse Rd. A lot of the blm around it is rolling but does harbor some lopes.
Stackem, there are several BLM access points off of I90. Also a couple of places off the Powder River Rd. Also there is or has been a WIA of the Tipperary Rd.
As others have said get a "chip" for your gps.

As Prerylyon mentions they are "legendary", my opinion is they are legendary because there is little public land to hunt on them and what there is gets hit unbelievably hard.

I knew the situation when we sent in for the draw. We drew it as our 3rd choice buck and 2nd choice doe tag. I've already got my chip for my GPS and have a bunch of access points marked. We figured it was going to be a harder hunt as I've already talked to the biologist and the warden. Its my second time out, hunted are 47 last year, and the other 4 guys first time.
I put a little windshield time in this summer as we traveled to Yellowstone for vacation. Seems the western side of the unit is better pronghorn territory as the eastern seems to be more draws and such. Either way we are looking forward to a week out there.
What is the small game hunting like? I thought of bringing a shotgun or .22 along also

Thanks, yeah we figured it was going to be a tough go but its still a week out of the office! No points and never done it before so we were stuck with the "legendary" zones as our options. Hoping if we get out of the truck and walk we might see some success. We identified our spots in order of importance by, "how far is it from the nearest road," mentality.....we'll see!

How often to guys get lucky and come across a landowner willing to let you shoot does? Even if we stomped around public all week looking for goats I would love to run in to a landowner who would let us access even pay a small trespass fee even if is was just to fill the freezer. We have been looking, emailing and calling and are striking out....

Permission from land owners depends on a couple things. If outfitter leases their land you have no chance. Meeting the owner in person verses phone or mail can be good if you are a people person. I have to say for me not asking has worked the best. If you are not a local they know what you are doing in Wyoming. Be polite and talk to the locals. Learn something about the area history local high school football team. I followed the local football team for two years prior to my trip. I knew the boys names and that they were working for their 3rd strait State title. I even went to my first 8 man football game. There are good people every where you just have to get to know them. Invest some of your time there to meeting people if it help your hunting great if not you will have still meet some fine folks. And by the way those boys went on to win the State title.

So, I have some doe tags in one of the 'legendary' units...

I will be out that way, God willing, after the buck tags close; after the 14th of Oct or the next week; depends on weather and family.

If anyone is still around then; I'm up for coffee or a steak after I fill my tags-or not fill my tags lol.
