I'm looking at a moose hunt in Alberta. The opportunity just came up, for this fall. I have a pretty good feel for the outfitter, as my buddy who invited me in on this trip hunted with him last year, for whitetail.
What I can't seem to find much of is information on the area and the current moose herd conditions. Specifically along the Hay River, north of High Level, AB. The outfitter indicates all is well, but I would like some independent info.
I tried the normal gov't pathways, with zero response. Not looking for guarantees, or anyone's hot spot. Just some fairly recent info on herd health and population.
Anyone been there recently?

I was raised in N. Alberta, only 250-300km south of where you're going. My brother still lives up there and goes out for moose every time he is drawn(every 4 years or so) and is successful each time. He's not picky, like most up there who were raised in hunting families younger bulls are better table fare and still large enough to provide for a family. The company he works for sends him up to the area where you are going every month and he tells me they see lots of moose. Grizzly and quite a large herd of bison(Wood Buffalo) also inhabit the area. If I remember I'll ask him what he's seeing and how the local guys are doing. Are you going early or late season? Good luck and hope you enjoy the north.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm heading up in a few weeks. Late Sept thru early Oct. Any suggestions on gear or weather conditions? Very much looking forward to it.

How did you make out on this hunt? Wish i had signed up earlier to offer my $0.02. Hopefully you got into a good bull, there are some great ones off the Hay, but they are few and far between. Still, a great area for a chance at a 50" bull here.
