A nice solo wolf in Atigun Pass. I'm sure he was hunting Dall Sheep. Perfectly prime but I couldn't take him at the time.

I do use a zoom lens. Generally about 200mm, but I recently bought a 100-400mm.

in this case the Haul road goes over Atigun Pass and the wolf happened to be going through at the same time I was. There is almost always sheep that hang around that area and I suspect he was targeting them. I know that certain wolves and certain packs pretty much single out a preferred species, like sheep, and only take the other critters on an incidental basis. I was within 50 yards at times.

I don't think that the only good wolf is a pelt, BUT, I would have liked to take this one home for the wall!

My wife has a photography business and this weekend we are going on a hike and she wants to bring her Nikon with but she has been debating buying a zoom lense, that's why I was asking. Thank ak

AK Aviator you've got to stop posting all these pics. I already want to go to Alaska to hunt sheep, grizzly and moose and you are just stoking the fire! I just don't have quite enough money yet. Are there any good jobs up there? I might just move there and avoid the hiring a guide requirement lol.

Come on up and hunt moose first...no guide required for them yet, then check out the job market while your here and make the move!

After that, concentrate on bears; it's "the good ole days" for bears right now. They seem to be everywhere!

Our sheep are in the rebuilding phase after a few tough winters. We still have them but it's getting hard to find a good one. Alaska will likely be altering the management strategy for sheep pretty soon.
