Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. Just looking for some advice on quality elk units I have about 12 points but have always relied on my dad to know the best areas. He passed away this last year so I'd like some advice on the best units for a trophy bull and about how many points it takes to draw out for those areas.

Welcome to the forum. Are you a resident or nonresident? You looking to hunt soon or willing to wait 10+ years?

Thanks. I'm a resident but I mostly hunt up in Idaho. I think I would be willing to wait I want a shot at a great area with great bulls...

Then the question becomes "what in your opinion is a great bull?" Many of the mid to top tier units in UT can produce a 350 or above bull...some just produce more of them. If you would be satisfied with a 300-340 bull and have 12 points, you could hunt many of the middle tier units on a muzzy tag. That's what I did and shot a nice 310-320 6×6. If you just want to hunt and don't have to have the biggest bull on the mountain, i'd just draw a tag and go hunt. If you want more info, PM me.

Scott said it pretty good. If you want a 350 plus bull and a great area, you are a long ways away. San Juan, Pavaunt, Monroe, Boulder are great areas and some of the best bulls. n YOu will need lots of points 19-20 now, so you are year/decades away form that hunt.

If you want to hunt and have a chance at a good bull if everything goes just right, SW Desert, Beaver, Panguitch lakes, Fishlake, are good. YOU are still along ways away. 16-18 points now, so it will be decades also.

Other good areas is Manti, Book cliffs and maybe a few others. these are about 15-17 points and still decade away or more.

These are just my opinion but the points are about right on according to the odds sheets the dwr gave out.

All good pointers from the previous posts. If your wanting to hunt a bit sooner, you might consider some late hunts.

Once you decide on how long your willing to wait, let us know and Im sure someone will have some good ideas for you

I think the muzzy tag is the way to go. About the same success rates as early rifle and u could draw a manti tag with 11 or 12 points for instance. Several other good units u could Draw with 13-15 points.
