Advice: Archery Elk hunt in Unit 76 or OTC 77

Looking for advice from the Colorado experts. I'm an Idaho resident and have been applying in Colorado for some time. This app year I have 13 PP and am considering if I should cash them in on the Unit 76 archery limited draw or keep accumulating them for an eventual Unit 2/201 archery hunt in the years to come. If I bank another PP this year I'm considering a unit 77 OTC archery hunt. My hunting partner and I use horses to get deep back in the country.

Any advice from the Colorado experts?

Thanks

IMO, with the current point system and tag allocation and with point creep you may never catch 2/201. Right now your 10 to 11 years out and that doesn't add the point creep into all of it.

DK is right. Those NW corner units are pretty exclusive to the high pp holders and the points increase every year.

4 years of good forage, mild winters and healthy herds. I live here and will never wait to hunt 2/201. The same quality animals are spread out over the state if you are willing to glass em up and go after them. 76/77 is a great great option IMO. With 10-13 point you have many many options for a quality hunt. Good luck!

Archery 76 is a fun and great tag to have i have helped on hunts there and have quite a few friends that have hunted there as well. Its a great area and lots of bulls and some great big bulls as well i do think the other guys are right 2,201 may never happen for you just do to point creep and personally i dont think its a great area anyways and there are much bigger bulls in other units its just and easy elk hunt. 76 is ruff country and can be challenging the few times we have been there we back pack in 2 miles straight up it feels like to get in the big basins and are always into elk i think you would like this hunt for this up coming year.

I'm gonna pile on with JPS.......I typed this and deleted it on my last post......." 2/201 has the point creep due to the long open shots, easy hiking, ranches and generally very very easy hunting" Yes its managed for a trophy hunt but......not much sweating going on up that way, lot of shots that a truck or UTV can drive up to for the pack out. Don't get me wrong we are in America....people should hunt how they want to and have that option......just not my style. As an example my family and I hunt in some areas that are ALWAYS getting beat up on the internet because of hunting pressure, terrain, too many ATV trails, access too good........all true......but with some homework, sweat and boots on the ground......news flash......the animals are there......280,000 strong they have to be some where! Ok off my soapbox......I tend to get wound up as the app season approaches and we wait on spring turkey. Feel free to PM me for anything. 195 days till the archery opener. Whoop Whooooop!

Slugz....Love it! Thanks for the feedback, I also am getting very excited for the opening of archery as I dream about all the options during the app season. I also cherish getting back away from the masses. Having a pack string helps get a base camp well up and away and then we sweat it out from there with the boot leather. I think Unit 76 has my pp points coming its way.

JPS. Thanks for the feedback. I've heard great things about 76 and my hunting partner and I enjoy going DIY and getting well back in the country to chase the rutting bulls. the 76 archery tag is looking like what I'll be targeting this year. Thanks for all the advice.

This is big country and lots of area dont over look those places that may only be 1-3 miles back in. Like i said 2-2.5 has been a magic number for us in this country good luck in the draw.
