A funny thing happened in the woods this year ! So, this year I got back to the woods to hunt deer. I prepped a little differently this year with my clothing. I washed all my washables in the Code Blue detergent used the scent killer dryer sheets and sprayed down just before I went into the woods. I also put all my clothing and gear in large duffle bags with the scent wafers in pine and dirt varieties. Well Ill be a..... if it didn't work! I was still hunting a few ridges and about 1/2 mile into my trek I met a young bull moose almost at the the top of a ridge. Freezing at the moment I first saw him I watched as the bull came to me, 30 yds turned into 30 feet and finally 10 feet. It was cool ! Just as I was about to move on and get on with it another bull showed up and did the same thing. Now I had one on one side and another working in just as close as the other. With 2 bulls - with horns ! at about 10 feet on either side of me it was uncomfortable at first. I watched as they sniffed and smelled the air and they looked at me circling for a bit and then they laid down ! I spent 45 min watching them and wondering why they hadn't winded me. I know they saw me ...they just couldn't smell me it had to be the cover scent. I was wearing leather boots, heavy wool pants and a wool shirt on top of a fleece shirt and polypro longhandles. I was also wearing leather gloves. NOTHING was scent proof or specialty clothing, even my hat was a Stormy K wool model. The weather was cold 18 deg F and a lite wind that was swirling...not great hunting conditions at all.
So I got to see some of the most wonderful animals in nature and it was amazing ! My camera was buried in my pack - until I stopped for a drink and then it stayed in my shirt pocket for the rest of the week. It was a first for me after 40 years of hunting and fishing.
Scent control works - now if the deer would cooperate !
