So I just picked up a 458 win mag. Anyone have any info on this caliber at all. Trying to figure out what kinda scope to put on it also. Any sugestions?
I had a 416 weatherby mag, was touted as a premier African plains gun. I acquired it and a 50 cal Desert Eagle in a trade. The 416 had a muzzle break on it and wasn't bad to shoot but very loud! It had a Vari X III scope on it!
I went to Alaska to help my buddy work a gold claim. I bought a .458 mag to stop grizzly attacks. It came with 2 boxes of 500gr. The first time I shot it it knocked my hat off. Being just 30 years old I thought it was funny.
I never had to use it on a grizz, but i'm sure it would have knocked one on it's butt. You shouldn't need 500gr bullets unless you go for elephants.
Never owned one personally. I did however work up some black bear loads for a fella a few years ago. His rifle was a custom mauser in a pretty maple thumbhole stock. It wasn't too bad even from the bench. Being that it was about 20 years ago the data escapes me,but I do know we used 350gr bullets,Speer I believe. I guess he did kill a blackie with it. I've always been intrigued with the round. Have one in my cartridge collection. Just a big old meat hammer of a round! Cool stuff.
