Hey guys, dad and I are heading to colorado this year for elk. We don't have a lot of points (dad-4, me-3) dad needs muzzleloader due to an elbow injury but I'd take archery. We are going to apply separate It be my first time out but dad has hunted 14 around steamboat springs but He'd like to try a different unit. I was looking into 29 but wasn't sure if dad would be able to draw it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Looking at the 2014 draw summaries, neither of you should have any problem drawing a tag. The archery EE tag got it with one point, as did the MZL bull tag. You should even be safe from some point creep. I don't know anything about the unit however. I am exploring doing something similar on a CO deer hunt next year. Good luck, you don't have a lot of time to decide.

Are you a non-resident? And are you set on archery? 3 non-resident points would get some decent muzzleloader units.

I wouldn't burn 3 points on archery. You can draw a muzzy tag on a LOT of colorado real estate with 3 points. Might want to help your dad fill his tag this year, and then put in for your own muzzy tag next year.

Oops forgot to put in non residents. Yea I don't really want to burn it for archery but dad No longer wants to go to colorado, he wants to start hunting Idaho next year so I'm trying to put in for the best unit we can with the points we have. I've printed out last year draw results but haven't shuffled through all of it yet

I think you can put in as a party and both go MZ hunting. Lots of units to pick from and you would get to spend the whole season hunting together.
I'm not familiar with the units you mentioned, but it seems there are a lot of chooses that would make for a fun hunt if your just wanting any bull! I think I'm cashing in my 4 pts. on a MZ hunt this year also. Good luck with whatever you decide!

GMU 29 is a great area i was born and raised right there and it was my stioming grounds for years. It is still my dads favorite place to go hunt elk cause it never maders when he goes he always gets an elk. Te terrain can be a little tuff and some of the roads are bad in this area. There are some absalute giant elk here. They just dont get hunted very hard it seems. Another area you could look into would be 39 above evergreen this is another great muzzleloader area or archery tag. Muzzleloader for 39 takes 2 PP and for archery it takes 1PP. I feal that 39 is a better area for muzzle loader then archery.
