300WM twist rate?

My son is trying to decide between a Tikka T3x Superlite or Browning Hell?s Canyon in 300 WM. The Tikka lists a 11? twist while the Browning lists a 8? twist. There is bound to be a great difference between bullet weight performance in the two. I don?t have any experience with a 300WM so let?s hear it from y?all.

Browning weighs more but has a 26? barrel.
Tikka weighs less with a 24.3? barrel and is a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

Never mind, I see you must be talking about the long range McMillan version. I don't know about the tikka but if it's only 11 I'd look strongly at the browning to be able to shoot the heaviest bullets

The heavier the bullet the more twist you need. An 8 twist barrel seems a little over kill for 30 cal but it should stabilize any bullet out there. A 11 twist will work with 180 grain bullets but you may have problems if you want to shoot 215's or 230's.

This- and if you are shooting a 30 cal, why would you want to shoot less than 180 gr. If it was the only gun I owned, I could see finding the all-purpose bullet weight, but in this case, I'd drop down in caliber or get the correct twist for 180-230.

I shoot a Tikka T3 300 win mag and I believe it is 11. I shoot 180 gr Nosler Trophy Grade and it is one hell of an accurate rifle. I shoot targets at 1000+ with no issues.

I want a WSM in 1:11" but I'd plan to focus on 150-165gr bullets.

I believe most are 1:10", ie the browning is I would think,

I think usually the 180gr is the best bet for the 300 Win.Mag., but being able to shoot 200/210/220 might be nice.

honestly I think the 11" twist would be fine for 150-180gr and if you really need more than 180 from a 300, I'd probably want a 338/340, or 375.

look at some charts, I bet 11" could even probably handle 200grs.

Mine is a 1:10 and shoots 165, 180, 190, and 200 grain bullets very well. Haven't tried it with anything heavier

1:10 or 1:11 is what Id be looking for, stabilization is more dictated by bullet length rather than weight, which sometimes coincide but not always. You’ll find XX brand 180gr may shooter better than XXX brand 180gr in the same twist barrel. This is most likely due to the length of the bullet. Longer bullets need faster spin rates to stabilize sooner. Sorry for the rambling, have no experience with either rifles.
