When your buying maps for hunting are you getting the 25K scale or 100K scale. I know there are benefits for both I was hoping to get your opinions.

I would get a 100K map that covers the area to show landownership and to get an overview of the entire area and roads. I would also get some 24K scale to show more detail. 100K maps won't show enough detail if you are using them for a scouting tool, you need the 24K to see vegetation, small water sources and topographic detail.

I get 100,000 for general scouting and 24000 when I found my area I am going to concentrate on. There are alot of free maps online so u can really do both.

I download my topo maps from USGS for free. Having them in digital format allows me to play with them in Photoshop. You can trim out the area you want to hunt and mark the trails, etc. and then print it out in any size you want.

If anyone has any access to a GIS (Geographic Information System) software like ArcView or a CADD program you can pretty much custom make any map you want. Most of the western states have tons of data either form US Forrest Service, USDA, BLM ect. Problem is most of those programs are pretty spendy.
