.220 AI Swift 3 shot group 002.jpg220 Imp Swift with Chrono.jpg

Just got back from the range checking out my 25-06 before antelope hunting a couple of weeks away. Decided to take my custom .220 Ackley Improved Swift and shoot it too. I just finished re-bedding it. I wasn't too happy with the bedding job I did several years ago. # shot group at 100 yards looks like one hole! My load chronographs at 4050 and really shoots great. I an getting tighter groups after the re-bed.

Prairie dogs better stay in their holes!

Knowing how fast a 220 Swift burns barrels I can just imagine putting more powder into the case with the Ackley.

But then I did the same thing with my .22-250 Ruger #1 and love it for shooting small varmints and where legal the larger animals.

I built this rifle about 3 years ago. It has a Shilen match SS barrel. I shot over 1000 rounds thru it so far and it shows no signs of barrel erosion or wear. I know that the Swift had a reputation for eating up barrels when it first came out, but that was over 60 years ago. I believe that with todays better powders, it will shoot a long time before I need to look at replacing a barrel.

The swift is a favorite of mine also. Bought my first one in 76 I think, ruger. Coyote killing machine. Never lost a coyote I hit with it. My hunting buddy (bil) at the time sold his 25-06 and got one also after he saw me take out a few coyotes. Inherited his swift 2 years later when he was killed in a plane wreck. I'm thinking I should try some of the new powders in them and work up a load.
Thanks for posting CC.

I really like the Ackley Improved version I have. I really shoots. The powder that seem to work best for me is Reloader 15.That in combination with Sierra Bench Rest bullet (53 gr BTHP) is great.

Tahoe, Yosemite,
I love my 220. An old rancher who owned land from the Sacramento valley almost to Tahoe passed on his whole gun collection before passing some years ago. This was his high country coyote eliminator, as he called it.
I will say this gun has put down a lot more than just coyotes.

Any centerfire is legal in California. I was born & raised there and the first deer I shot when I was 12 was a doe with a .22 Hornet. I used to have a .22-250 and killed a couple of deer with it, but back then there was not much choice in bullets, also realized pretty quick that they had to be fairly close, because of bullet energy loss and wind drift.

Good shooting. Thats a flat shooting gun for sure. Probably be good for antelope as long as it wasn't too windy?

I think I would have to change bullets. The one I am using for prairie dogs is a hollow point, probably just explode and blow the hell out if the meat. It does shoot well and is really fun to work with.

Great shooting!!
I have a 700 classic in .220 been hiding in the back of the safe. Decent shooter but walks quickly as it heats up after a few rounds.

Now because of your post I have to get it out and get to shooting it again, lol
