2018 non-resident preference point fees

There was some conflicting information on the recent thread about preference point fee increases in Wyoming. Since I'm impatient and want to know, I asked G&F what they were going to be. My answer came today. Per the email, the fees for 2018 will be:

Antelope $31
Deer $41
Elk $52
Moose $150
Sheep $150

I also looked back to find where the legislature authorized the deer/elk/antelope points to go up to $75, so you can guess where things are headed.

Thought some of you might be interested....

Pricing people right the hell out of hunting.

I envy you guys who live there #1 and those of you guys who got to enjoy the heydays of the past #2.

I don't think a $4 increase all up, for your antelope, deer and elk points is pricing anyone out of hunting. Drink one less beer at the bar.

I agree, in the grand scheme of things the tag and preference point prices a not that bad when you consider all the other things that you spend money on. You just need to plan things out if you want to hunt out of state.

I don't know about you guys but that up to $75.00 authorization is a worry for me. In my studies it is trending that most all antelope units will take points to draw in the near future. The units with average to good public land will take 5+ to draw. If you buy deer and antelope points for 5 to 6 years you could have close to $1,000.00 in points buy the time you draw. That is not for the few coveted units. Then you also have to think the tag prices are trending up. To do a DIY antelope and deer hunt you could be in $2,000.00 or more before any other cost. Anyone have any golf clubs for sale?

Thanks for the update. It'll be super interesting to see how many stay in the game for sheep and moose. Not sure if I should or not. Feel like I should stay in one more year just to see how many drop out.

Sheep hunters tend to be fanatical and/or have very deep pockets. I don't see any of them dropping out. Moose: who knows?

The price to hunt moose is going up everywhere. Perhaps not the tags but the outfitters that you might want to hire to get the job done in one hunt. Not very many hunters can afford to head to Alaska 3 or 4 times to bag a moose, so they hire a outfitter.

Granted you don't need a outfitter in Wyoming but if you are a non resident that doesn't have time to scout it would be in your best interest to hire one.

As for sheep, Alabama hit the nail on the head about them. They don't care what they spend once they get bit by the sheep hunting bug. They will sell their first born for that sheep tag.

Not too many nr have figured out how to read the "total preference points" and "draw odds reports" for Moose and Sheep by the looks of it. Or they're really bad math.

I've actually ran a few excel spreadsheets on the chances of me drawing a sheep tag in Wyoming. I am currently 34 years old and have 9 sheep points. Best case scenario, assuming no decreases in sheep tags for the next 35 years, and assuming that a steady rate of point holder attrition will occur, I will draw a sheep tag when I'm 69 years old.

Worst case scenario, which means that tags are going to most likely decrease and not that many people are going to give up their points, at age 75 I still have less than a one percent chance of drawing a tag.

Makes me think of that movie dumb and dumber. So your saying there's a chance?!

So are you staying in? $150 a year is a lot of money for nothing in return.

I got out of both moose and sheep in Wyoming 2 years ago after getting a couple points for each.

I'm bad at math but i'm great on knowing how crappy my luck is.

IMO, the guys that are bailing are making a big mistake.

The point schemes are unsustainable and I see changes happening in how tags are allocated, caps on maximum number of points, random/point quota percentages changing, etc. etc.

The only way to beat the odds is to apply everywhere for everything and stay the course...its worked very well for me, and I'm not all that lucky in the draws either.

Strategically, I think you will be proven right, but financially it's not sustainable for me. Therefore, I'm back to picking my spots to apply.
