i've been pouring over data since joining this forum and with some great advise from the membership, i think i have to decided to give Colorado the nod for next years elk hunt with my son. Looking at draw stats and success rates, i am looking at units 28,37 and 371 for muzzleloader either sex. The draw is not 100% with no points, but is in the upper 70's to lower 80's percentile to draw for a non-res with no points the past few years. Not asking for any honey holes, just asking for anyone that has experience in these units. We are not trophy hunters, just more gathering info for future years when my daughter is ready to come with us. We are planning on coming out next summer for a few days with the family to scout as much as we can. 12 hour drive isn't too bad, so that is the plan. i appreciate any help.

28 is OK. I've hunted 3 different times during archery. 371 is rugged if I remember. Haven't hunted it though. No nothing about 37. All I can say is you better be in shape and not allergic to altitude.

Thanx matthoek21. I am also looking at units 18 and 181, that hunt code has decent odds of drawing as well. Anyone have any experience in those units?

My in-laws moved up to Granby a couple of years ago so these are my new local units. There is a reason why there are hundreds of leftover licenses available for these units, specifically 1st and 4th seasons. The CPW game atlas has some really great info on summer/winter ranges. Some of the terrain is very rugged and/or is wilderness. I'm all about rugged areas as it scares a lot of people but some is so rugged the elk do not even like going in.

I'm learning more about the area all the time but these are my initial findings.
