I have a 2015 Non-Resident (meaning no wilderness areas for me) Wyoming Region F rifle mule deer tag. I would like to harvest a mature 4-point (165" or above, if possible). I hunt spot and stalk, have a polaris ranger, and am willing to backpack in for multiple days if necessary.

I am wondering if anyone can give me any advice on trails, canyons, drainages, etc. to focus my pre-season scouting. Any other advice would be appreciated. I've hunted other areas of WY but never Region F for deer. Depending on the area/type of hunt I may bring my 9-year old son along. Thank you.

I applied for the tag 3rd choice but didnt draw. If I would have and my schedule allowed I would wait until the end of season.

I cant pin point specific areas because I have never hunted it but I do know grizz live there and its some big country.

Good luck

I also have that tag this year, it will be my first time there also so I can't be much help. I do know there are many grizzlies there, I was leaning towards backpacking too, but the bears have me staying at the truck day hiking, plus the end of October can bring nasty weather if you do backpack in be well prepared for snow, and grizzlies. Good luck!

Thanks AT Hiker. Sorry you didn't draw the tag. (Story of my hunting life . . .) Hopefully, you can draw it next year. Feel free to look me up on the forum if you do and I'll download to you what I learn this year. I've been researching on GoogleEarth and my blm maps. Hopefully, I'll get into some mature bucks. There are some great looking spots where you can get away from most other hunters. I am going to bring bear spray in case of grizzly problems.

Thanks mnhoundman. Congrats on getting that tag. Yeah, I'll bet that part of the country can get some serious weather in late October. I''ve hunted WY Region D in October two times when it was well below freezing overnight. I hope my three season tent and down sleeping bag and insulated groundpad will be enough to keep me warm at night. I am going to call the biologist this week to see if I can get some more info. I was thinking of backpack hunting somewhere in Units 111 or 112, but I read today on the WGFD website that Units 105 and 106 should have a good number of mature bucks. Not sure where to focus my time yet. I hope get out and scout in a few weeks (it's an all-day drive for me each way, so scouting is tough).

Hey, I noticed your location is Minnesota. I interviewed for a job in Illinois last week (I actually connected through Minneapolis). If I get the job (which seems like a great job), I am a bit bummed at the prospect of leaving behind the western mountain hunting I love so much (I live in the Intermountain West), but I've seen hunting shows that indicate that Illinois has great whitetail hunting and some turkeys too. So maybe it wouldn't be so bad moving there from a hunting perspective afterall. Any thoughts?

I have also heard Illinois has great whitetails. That's about all that I know. Good luck on the job and the hunt, let us know how it goes.

Everyone keeps talking about these grizzlies.

Exactly how dangerous is it to hunt where they are at?

Not afraid of you like black bears I presume?

Anyone here have any encounters with them they could talk about?
