My 16 year old son and I drew a rifle hunt in New Mexico Game Management Unit (GMU) 16D for fall 2015. I have never hunted elk in this unit before, but I did have an archery hunt in NM GMU 15 in 2001. We saw a lot of elk, but I didn't get a shot. I am looking for advice on where to hunt in GMU16D, and any helpful information would be appreciated.

I am pretty computer literate, but I don't see a link to the New Members section.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I am looking forward to our hunt. I have been using Google Maps to survey the area. It looks like the area is mostly low mountainous terrain. I saw a few higher peaks. I will be getting topo maps of the area. I hope to make it down there to scout for a few days sometime this summer. I wish you good luck on your hunt.

I haven't hunted that unit in years but have bow hunted the neighboring 16A unit twice in the last 5-6 years. Definitely not a unit where you want to shoot the first runt that walks by. I would call the Game and Fish guy assigned to that unit. I believe it is still KC Gehrt. He's a younger guy, but a good dude and super helpful. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell you what little I recall about the unit. Nothing like huntin with your kid!

We are going to go scout this weekend (9/11-9/13). We hope to find somewhere to park the camper when we go on 10/16. I am taking my son and a friend of his. There is bow hunting going on right now, so we will have to be conscious not to cause any problems for the hunters that are around. I hope to find some hunters that have had some luck while we are down there. I am also hoping to hear some bugling going on. About one month before we go. I am looking forward to it.

I have heard that, now we need to go and make it a good hunt. I haven't used a rifle to hunt since I was a kid. I have run into problems with careless hunter before. My son wanted to hunt with a rifle this season. There are only 55 licenses for the unit on our hunt, so I don't anticipate running into any problems.

We are going scouting this coming weekend. I hope to find the place where we will hunt. Bow hunting is going on now, so we may run into some other hunters while we are looking around. I am more pumped about this than my son is. I hope I can show him some big elk, and help him to understand the privilege we have to go an hunt these magnificent animals.

That's unfortunate. I applied to 16d and a few other units, along with the 5000 other people. I am not expecting to draw obviously, but building up some information for the future possibility of drawing a tag is helpful.

Hello Guys, I just found out that I was lucky enough to draw a 16D Sept 15-24 archery tag. I understand this is a great unit with a number of roads and access. I am willing to walk/pack in and I don't need a guide, although I might be willing to pay for one just for daily services. There are lots of different maps out there including google earth. If you have any map preferences to suggest I would appreciate it. Any thoughts on areas to start scouting or contact names would also be greatly appreciated. Willing to do some horse trading for good information. If you know of someone I could speak to let me know. Thank you
