2014 Antelope Hunt with 0 PP

My hunting group used our prefernce points this year and successfully hunted unit 47. This was our first western hunt of any type and we had an absolute blast! So much so, that a couple of the memebers have suggested trying to hunt again in 2014. I have enlightened them that unit 47 is likely NOT a possibility with 0PP but there would be some options.

Those options of course are drawing a 0PP unit as a 2nd choice while gaining PPs for the future. The other option would be to pick up some left over tags after the draw is complete. As we all know, most of the 0PP units are majority private land or surrounded by private land.

I am considering the Gillette, Sundance and Douglas areas, mainly to stay close enough to major towns for motel access.

My questions for the forum are 1) where does one start in finding a rancher that will allow hunting access for no or little fees? and 2) Does anybody have a lead they would like to share based on a positive past experience in those areas?

Wy Game and Fish can get you a list of landowners. My suggestion would be call some landowners, try and secure access. There are some great landowners out there, offer to come out and help branding or fixing fence. They will be more open to letting you hunt.

Times they are a changin in Wyoming. 5 years ago I would have told you finding a landowner who would allow access for little or no money in those areas would be no problem. Not so today....you will have trouble finding someone who has goats on their land and will let you hunt them without parting with a substantial amount of money. More than likely it would be more than you spent on the tag. Hunters are our own worst enemy, people paying anywhere from 1500 - 3500 for guided antelope hunts have pushed the leasing game further than it has ever gone before.

***That's true for a buck, but many will let you on to hunt does for a small fee, especially after opening week.

Im old school, help a man out, share your knowledge with him, give him useful information that may save him time and money. You know, make this world a better place to live in. There is truth in the idea that it is more blessed to give than to receive. BUT this new generation! Lets see. How much can I make off this sucker? I will never give any information without charging coinage. After all, don't people realize how hard I had to work for that knowledge? And if they think that they are going to kill MY animals on my property, they are nuts.......OH!, you are willing to pay? Lets talk. EBO my man, the new generation of hunters(businessmen) are very quickly taking over the ole west. They will tip you upsidedown and shake every last penny off of your body, and be proud of it. I wish that God would open up some of these lame landowners fields and swallow up these animals to bring these maniacs to their senses. This is not to say that money should not be a factor, its just that its way out of hand. Kind of like a major league baseball player with a 238 batting average making 4 million a year. A total debacle. I predict that this school of thought will continue until these greedy humans have ruined hunting or Jesus Christ returns to this planet. On November 15th of this year, I invited a man from Kentucky to hunt my property. Time fails to tell of his past, long story short. We set him up in one of our Hotspots. He killed a 140 class buck @ 8:15. This man is STILL pumped 20 days later. We even fed him breakfast. Fee? $0. I should have paid him for the satisfaction I felt. Hey, gotta go. Work just called. We are running short at the penitentiary so I am on 24 hour call. Merry Christmas to all, TeddyBear

I think his work in the maximum security prison here in southern MI has warped the guy beyond help! Reading all his posts is like eating a sour lemon!!!

I used to hunt out of Douglas. It used to be fun but pretty crowded. I think the last time I hunted there was 2008. We usually got our goats ranging from 12-14" on public land in the Thunder Basin east of Bill. We didn't have the HuntGPS chip back then so you had to keep a close eye on the maps, pretty checkerboarded. Douglas has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and meat processors, makes for a relaxing trip. The Douglas Chamber of Commerce used to have a list of landowners that had trespass fees but their new website sucks. I would call them if interested and maybe they have a list they can send you.
