Better Late than never! So my wife, brother in law, father in law and I headed to Region M for the opening week of deer season. 33 hrs of driving later we found are selves just south of Ten Sleep looking for some BLM to set up camp on. After checking three of the proposed camp spots and finding out they had already been taken we decided to cut are losses and pitch a tent at the RV park in Ten Sleep for the night. Well do to weather we ended up staying there the whole week. I think my wife was happy cause she was able to take two hot showers. We spent the first two days hunting deer. On the third day we made the 100 mile trip over the big horns to look for goats in unit 20. My brother in law had a small buck down in less than 1 hr. The rest of us didn't have such luck and went back over the big horns empty handed. The rest of the week was spent hunting deer. In the end we had a great trip and all tagged deer. My self 3x3, wife 2x2 brother in law smaller 4x4 and father in law spike. We plan on going back to WY in 2015 for another DIY hunt for goats and deer. This time we are looking at region Y for deer and unit 20 for goats. looking at maybe the second week for less pressure.

Congrats on your hunt! You should have been out there this year and you could have hunted in shirtsleeves some days with us. It was the craziest turn around I've ever seen from the nasty early weather in 2013 to highs of 93 this season and no snow at all until I headed home on 11/1.

Wow topgun so I'm guess the roads were in a little better shape this year. Looking forward to coming back 2015. Think I'll be trying for region Y.
We had enough rain that it ruined the two tracks opening day of antelope season on 10/1, but that was it and the rest of the month for the most part was too warm for really good hunting, especially for elk, as many stayed way up high and didn't come down much into our area.

Congrats! I was also in the same area in 2013 and again this year. Last year was nasty but we also had a successful hunt. As Topgun said, this year was completely different. I found we had a better hunt this year even though it was much warmer. All the roads were dry and it spread the pressure out. We hunted an area this year that we couldn't get to last year due to road conditions and were able to take 3 decent bucks for that area.

Thanks Guys... I really got the itch to come back out. I've Hunted both WY and MT and had a great time and meet great people both places. I hunted Custer NF in 2011 for Deer. 4 out of the 5 of us tagged out. I was the unlucky one that trip. Now just trying to deside whether to hunt Region Y in WY or try to go back to MT. The nice thing I found about that area of MT was we only saw three other hunters all week and all of them were hunting elk. As you guys know Region M & Y in WY the hunting pressure was much higher. I've thought to try and find a ranch to pay a small trespass fee. If we come back out to WY I'm just hoping to be able to set up camp on BLM and not have to stay in a RV park again. The park was nice but its just not the same as making camp on public land. I'll take and advice you guys got! Ryan

Also JEandAsGuide love to see some pics of your deer!

For some reason I am having trouble posting pics from my phone right now but all the pics are actually posted on here already. I put the pics of our deer this year from M in the mule deer success thread and last years hunt is in a thread titled First year success. If I figure out my picture problem I will send you a PM

Congrats!

If you have a public spot in MT that few know about I would head there. Region Y is becoming congested because deer numbers just dont seem to be good on public land in the lower country and in the higher country it is teaming with elk hunters.

At Hiker has just made what I would call a very good, quick synopsis of Y and actually R on the other side of the mountain is the same way too from what I'm hearing!

The more and more I look at maps and search Google the more I think I'll end up just hunting region M for deer and unit 20 for goats again. I'll just hope for good weather so we can spread out.

One thing I do know for sure (at least for me) the more I hunt one area the more successful I become. Regardless if its good or not, knowing the area is a very good thing.

That's for sure and if he found a spot in M like he's talking about it is sure not representative of the region as a whole or they wouldn't have cut out the doe tags and have some areas with real short seasons and buck horn restrictions like is in place.

Did the same thing in 2013 as well. I was antelope only and my buddy hunted goats and deer. We both tagged out on goats but the deer were another story. Seems we were a week or two too late. But that's hunting.
