We ran into lots of local elk hunters down in the basin, they were worse off than the deer hunters, at least we had resident herds to look at. We ranged all the way up to the Uncompaghre NF looking for animals with no luck. I did cut some fresh elk tracks on a canyon rim in the thick junipers south of Norwood, but that was it. We had friends near Telluride hunting elk, and they never saw one animal either. Dad and I were glad to fill our tags and get some meat out of this season...Dad got a 23-inch 4-pointer at 460 yards, which was the 3rd best buck we saw the whole time. We ended our adventure with some good knowledge of our unit and hunting area...we'll be back for 3rd season in a few years. Thank you Colorado Cowboy for all of your advice and Merry Christmas to you and your family! You are right there! Without snow our elk hunt was a zero as none had started to migrate off the mountain in Utah.
