Had a tag that's valid for August and after helping a couple buddies with their elk, thought I'd give it a go today.
Found a pretty good knot of elk, probably 50 or so.
Worked my way into the edge of the herd and found 10 or so that had a variety of cows/calves. I try real hard to not shoot cows with calves and picked out a 1.5 year old cow.
Shot it with my first hunting rifle that I reworked the stock on and had a new pacnor barrel installed a few years back. Second elk I've shot with it in as many shots.
One shot at 194 yards with my 6mm Ruger M77 and a 90 grain accubond and it was all over but the knife work and packing. Elk made it about 10 steps and collapsed.
Recovered the bullet on the off-side, went through a rib and the thin part of the off side shoulder blade...retained 54 grains.
The .338 continues to collect dust.
