I have been looking into getting a new 38 cal rifle. I stopped one of my local gun shops and they have a Weatherby Mark V ARROYO RC in 338-378 WBY MAG the gun had a Nightforce 4-14x-.25.

Is the 338-378 a good round or just off the wall wildcat. Could I achieve the same thing buy sticking to a 338 RUM or 340 WBY Mag.

The .338-378 Weatherby is a whole different animal than any of the other .338 mags.

To shoot it you are going to have to reload unless you can afford $7-$8 each time you pull the trigger, yep around $150 for a box of 20.

It will drop anything that walks as long as the caliber isn't restricted.

I myself have a .340 Weathery and it is fun to shoot to a point, where both the .338 RUM and the 338-378 would just be painful. I can shoot my .340 about 10 times before I have to set it down, I can just imagine what those other two boomers would feel like.

I have a couple of 340s and a 30-378. My brother has the 338-378. In my opinion the 338-378 is in a class by itself. Truly awesome performance but at a pretty steep cost. If you enjoy hand loading you can avoid the $150+ box of shells. With the Weatherby muzzle break installed the recoil isn't that bad but the noise is pretty extreme. Honestly I was not interested in shooting it without the break so I can't comment on that experience. My 30-378 does not have a muzzle break and I would rather shoot my 340 all day than the 30-378. You cannot get the same performance out of a 340 but the 340s performance is nothing to scoff at. I know I am biased but I would go with the 340 just my opinion.

on paper the 338-378wby doesn't do that much more than the 340wby, from what I remember.

check out the 338 edge over the 338 RUM....ie it's a 338-300 RUM, which has more powder than the 338 rum.

Have a .340wby, great round, I think if I ever wanted another 338, it would be the 338 EDGE

or perhaps checkout the 338 Lapua... which is like the 338-378wby minus the belt. it is usually loaded at lower pressures than the 338-378 but I think in the right rig you could load it hotter?
