Anyone have experience hunting deer in unit 35 2nd or 3rd season? It's a good unit if you don't mind sharing it with 650 deer and elk hunters in only 268 sq miles. Not sure how you hunt it with that many guys running around.
I took a small buck in there a good number of years ago. 2nd season IIRC. But I waited at home 'til the season was 3-4 days old then headed out. Most everybody was packing up and getting out by then. I ran into a couple NR guys packing up who swore there was not a living thing anywhere in the unit. 2 hours later I pulled the trigger. Things could've changed by now, but I like the idea of not necessarily hunting very hard (or not at all) and let the weekend warriors get tired and head for home.
There are a lot of tags the 2nd and 3rd seasons and it can be tough getting away from the crowds. A lot of deer in that unit migrate down from high spots after snow..so 2nd could be pretty tough. Sometimes there is decent snow the 3rd season (if you are lucky). Piney Valley owns a lot of private in that unit. That's generally where the deer go once pressured. If you want to pay big $ for a guided hunt it would be great just about any season you can hunt! Another consideration that makes it even more crowded is it's an OTC elk unit. You may want to check how many cow and bull hunters..plus deer hunters are in the unit?
There's decent access in Milk Creek and if you want to get away from the crowd, throw on a backpack or saddle up some ponies and head toward Castle Peak. Hunted up there for 40+ years and although it has changed dramatically, it's still one of my favorite places to hunt. Good GPS with private map info will guide you around. The place is rough and tough up high but it grows big deer - always has and always will. Think about archery or muzzle also - better weather to get up there and can stay longer usually.
It's a decent unit, but not what it used to be, I hunted it for a while, my dad hunted it for 20 years, then we got sick of it... It depends who you talk to how the unit is. Road hunting has changed it a lot and there's roads everywhere over there now. I packed a guy onto the east side of castle peak a few years ago where he pulled a nice bull out of archery. I've hunted mostly the west and south part of it.
My grandpa used to hunt that area every year. But seamed to grow in popularity, way to many hunters for my liking. If you work hard you can still find a good buck!
