Things I'm Thankful For

There’s a lot wrong with today’s America and there’s a lot that is right. Thanksgiving is a day when we should thank the Lord for being able to live lifestyles most people throughout history could never imagine and most of the world today only dreams about – the American Dream.

I am thankful for:

  • The God-directed foresight of those that wrote a constitution that put in place all kinds of freedoms, including religion, free speech, assembly and the right to bear arms
  • The many veterans, police officers, game wardens and fire fighters who put their lives on the line. More than a few lost their lives in buying and protecting our many freedoms
  • The freedom to hunt, to own and to shoot firearms and bows
  • 2.2 billion acres of U.S. public land that I can roam in pursuit of the peace and fun I find there
  • The enormous increase in game numbers over the past 100 years, thanks to hunter licenses, state wildlife departments and many nonprofit organizations dedicated to wildlife
  • Tremendous improvements in the quality and weight of modern hunting clothing and gear
  • The internet that gives me quick access to so much information it boggles the mind (Solomon would have been so jealous)
  • Motorized transportation and 4WD
  • The ability to travel anywhere in the world in a day, cheaply enough that most Americans can afford it
  • The ability to choose my own vocation and change it if I want
  • A home in which to gather my family for a huge Thanksgiving meal
  • Free education through high school
  • I have never gone hungry except by choice
  • I have never worried about food, shelter or clothing (remember that those in Jesus’ day were consumed with worry about those. Billions of people still are today)
  • The ending of slavery and the rise of civil rights
  • A mother and a father that stayed together while I was growing up, making for a stable home and keeping me out of poverty
  • Air conditioning – the ability to control the temperature and humidity of my environment with no effort
  • A church in which I can minister and be ministered to
  • Owning my own business and doing things the way I think is right, plus having flexible time for outdoor pursuits
  • Kids and grandkids – family, worth all the rest of these put together
  • A wife that has put up with me for all of her adult life, my best friend, lover and mother to our children
  • Most of all, my Savior and my Heavenly Father for the hope and wisdom they’ve given and how they’ve enriched my life

I could go on and on, and will on my own time.

I have two suggestions for you on Thanksgiving.

  1. Ask your family to name everything they enjoy that King Solomon, the richest man in the world in his time, would be jealous of (some are listed above but with thought you can come up with many more)
  2. Have everyone in your Thanksgiving celebration join in singing America the Beautiful. If no one can sing, let Ray Charles or Whitney Houston sing it for you, but there’s nothing like singing it yourself. (Katherine Lee Bates wrote it after sitting atop one of our Rocky Mountain peaks – Pikes Peak above Colorado Springs)

Happy Thanksgiving

We'll said! I'm thankful for the freedom we all enjoy! And for those who have defended our very way of life! I'm especially for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice!

"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." - Jesus, in John 15:13

I like Thomas Aquinas' definition of love - "to will and to act for the good of another." In that sense, those who died loved all of us, even those they didn't know personally.

I am thankful to just be alive and able to enjoy this great and wonderful country in which we live.

20 years ago I was told I had a 1 in 10 chance to live 5 years when my cancer returned. I think the good Lord has a plan for me and when I look in the mirror in the morning I say to myself "Someone has to be the 1".

Blessings to all of you and your families.
