Hey guys, I've been interested in getting a houndsmen association going for a few years now. We have a few already but their participation in our hunting rights and legal matters hasn't been very note able. I was contacted today by a woman out of Ely area that is an Outfitter, prois pro staffer and houndswoman that is interested in the same goals as I am. She also with a Facebook group called "United Houndsmen, Hunters, Outfitters, Trappers and Fishermen. We are trying to start a group that will educate and inform to stop the anti attack that seems to always be on the offensive and we on the defensive. We are looking to change that along with the FB group and several other supporters to take an offensive stand, educate the public and raise money to fight the legislative battles needed.
Soooo, my question is, does anybody in NV or anywhere have any experience in starting a non-profit or any information or advice? Feel free to PM me, we are dead set on doing this and fighting for our rights. And any of you on FB check out the above mentioned group. They are bringing sportsmen together from all parts of the US and working on doing the same things we want to do.

good luck Jason, that's awesome! go to your court house on Monday and they will set you in the right direction for a non profit. hopefully there is a lawman on here willing to give proper knowledge and insight on certain tasks.

If you are involved with your local or state trappers this may also be some one to talk to.
I have reached out to our nevada trappers association president. Also the California Houndsmen for Conservation President. They are very busy people and hopefully will find some time. Thanks for the info though.

I think first you'll have to form the organization at the state level through your proper Articles of Incorporation. Once you have the cooperation established, you can then file the form with the IRS to apply for 501c3 status where they'll review your proposed financial and organizational structure. Getting through the IRS crap can be a pain, but it is achievable. Forming the organization should be fairly easy, but you'd want to have tax exempt status with it, so keep that in mind. I think the IRS form for the 501c3 status was something like 40-50 pages long by the time we had everything together for it the one time I was involved with the process.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer so do your own research ;)

I have been researching my butt off and you are correct. The forming of the organization is not to difficult or costly, the 501(c)3 is the pain. After talking with someone at the Secretary of States office I learned that the 2 organizations we did have are no longer current and have been revoked. Meaning we have no representation in the houndsmen circle. I'm not sure if Southern Nevada has anything going though.

One of the many reasons I'm looking into this is NV is new to the bear hunting. NDOW is doing a 5 year study without changing any regs. until that study is complete. Several anti organizations attacked the bear hunt and specifically the use of hounds. They have shut up recently but when that period of study is up they are gonna hit and hit hard. They want the bear hunt stopped completely but will take little chunks if they can until they get their way. I'd really like to get support from hound hunters and hunters in general on this because they eventually will attack every form of hunting. California just proposed cut back on "legal" hunting and fishing... WHAT? Search Nevada Bear Hunting and see what comes up.

So I've contacted several people and presidents of other associations today. I've received a wealth of knowledge and support. Hound hunting suppliers, outfitters and hunters all want this thing to happen. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me.

Alright, here it is. We've got our board members and they are:
Musket Man- in chrge of beverages
MAKAIRA- public relations
Feather-silent partner
JasonGNV- field rep. And treasurer
The rest of the members drink MM's beverages while I hunt and collect donations and look for feather and MAKAIRA announces the happenings!

Has feather started his count this year?

Seriously though, ^^^^ I was kidding
The response I've gotten and the people I've been in touch with the last few days are amazing. The outfitters, commission members, hunters, trappers, hound suppliers are amazing and have been very supportive. Some of their ideas are fantastic and are needed. We are planning our first meeting of the minds soon and hopefully not long after that we will have paperwork submitted and be on our way. I've wanted to do this for a few years but didn't think there would be much interest, I was wrong and it's surpassed any expectations I had.

Hey Jason, I would suggest to not reinvent the wheel. I would suggest reaching out to SCI, SFW or several of the other hunting groups around the state or nationally and looking at a chapter under their umbrella. You can also form an organization without having the tax exempt status. Opening a 501c3 starts about 3k to 5k to start up and about 3k a year to maintain. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and God bless

Those are all things we are looking at except going on a national level. Staying as a state wide agency and supporting other organizations is the idea. It's gonna be a new organization for houndsmen but including all sportsmen.
MAKAIRA, money and hunting would be nice huh?
