Rifle companies don't understand Physics? or is it all marketing?

I see it time and time again...

a rifle model will chamber the .243win and it'll sport a 22" barrel

yet the 7mm-08/308 will come with a 24" barrel.

ie., a .243win needs more barrel length than a .308

Maybe customers just expect a .243 with a 22"? or for kids? handiness? I dunno?

For me it's about handling. If i remember correctly the difference was only around 75fps between a 22" and 24" barrel for a 270win shooting gmx super performance ammo.

Variety is the spice of life. Some folks like longer barrels and some like shorter some like thinner and some thicker. It depends what you are concerned about.

I agree, most rifles/calibers for hunting outside of the thick forrests in the east and the swamps of the south woube be better with a 24" tube and a 26" on the mags and overbores

Another reason might be the surge in suppressor ownership. I specifically bought my latest rifle in a 22" barrel to keep the overall length as short as possible without sacrificing power and accuracy when my suppressor is installed. hanging 8-10 inches of suppressor off the end of a 26 inch barrel makes it a damn long gun.

They sell what people want.

2 or 4 inches of barrel isn't much in the grand scheme of things.

That's a very interesting point. I hadn't thought about until you mentioned it, but you could very well be onto something...

Personally for how I hunt(by foot only often backpacking) I won't buy a rifle with a barrel longer than 22". I've taken my daughters' 7mm-08 on a few pack in trips and the 20" barrel ,shorter action, and shortened LOP make for a rifle which is 3.5" shorter than all my other 22" barrelled long action full size rifles. Significant when you're bushwhacking into the alpine. The only rifle I own that might benefit from more barrel would be my 25-06rem but then again it wouldn't be as handy for packing in the mountains hunting for mule deer.
