Planning Ak Moose hunt

I am looking at booking a moose hunt with PaPa Bear Outfitters in 2014 or 2015 (depending on WY elk draw in 2014). He hunts in AK Unit 18 (Lower Yukon River Drainage) and says there are a few monsters around, with good success on his hunts. Does anyone have any experience with this outfitter or Unit 18 moose hunts in general?

H.D., I've never hunted that area in Alaska and am unfamiliar with that outfitter. Are you looking for an un-guided hunt that is outfitted only. I could do some digging around for you if you'd like. Did you end up going on the hunt? I'm planning a moose hunt for 2016 or 2017 and I'm just now starting to look at air charters. Was just wondering how you did

One of the long time forum members did a DIY moose hunt and I think he was able to use atv's or side x sides. here is a link to his post. He doesn't post much here anymore I don't think but you could try an IM.

Hey buckbull,

I still come around here. That hunt was a life event for me. Great times.

Yes, we just brought our own ATV's and headed out to parts unknown. It worked out great for us, and everything was straight and legal. We DID get checked by a very nice State Trooper, so it was a good thing we crossed the t's and dotted the i's.

I fished with Papa Bear in 2006 on the Kwethluk river. It was freakin amazing. Kings and rainbows that were 5-7 lbs non stop. As far as outfitting, he had quality gear and did what he said he was going to do. It was a DIY float trip 8 days and about 100 river miles. We rented everything from him except tents and sleeping gear. We didn't see a lot of game but we were hooting and hollering so much while fishing I'm sure nothing was around.

We a Had a Russian Float plane pilot named Boris, the flight itself was worth the price of admission. We flew to a no name lake and portaged about 1/4 mile to the river and floated to the Kuskokwim.

One of my buddies has fished with him 2 more times. If I had the time and money I'd hunt with him.
