I've never heard of it, as far I know it's just open sights. I'm just kind of curious what the advantage of a non-magnifying scope would be over normal open.

We can use non magnifying scopes in Utah and I can attest that they are far better then trying to use open sights! I wished everyone would get on the same page so I don't have to own so many different muzzleloaders!!
