Well, here goes. I know you love these Topgun. My kid drew the Moskee Area for Wyoming cow elk. I wasn't even sure we were going to go elk hunting for his first year, so I kindof put him in for one I thought we would never draw but would be cool if we did. Oops. Well, anyway I was looking for suggestions. I am freaking out a little already. Hopefully we didn't take a tag from a serious hunter. I am not familiar with the area, but it looks like it has a lot of places to choose from to spend a few days. Any ideas on where to start looking? Well thanks everybody.

Not a huge area. You can cover most of it in one day. Just be sure to get the elk before they cross over into SD. If you're hunting rifle, good luck. Always hate hearing gun shots going from ridge to ridge as the herd of elk go every where except where you are. Use to hunt that unit all the time until a cow tags were less than 100% chance to draw. Kind of crazy that you aren't guaranteed a cow tag in a unit. The elk are every where off the grand canyon road and rifle pit roads. Just get off the roads and you should find them if you walk a bit.
Thanks birdhunter. Good info. We are rifle hunting. If I get my lazy butt going I will have to go through there one of these days. Good cautions, too. I will keep that in mind.

In the past I hunted the Moskee area extensively for turkeys. I saw quite a few elk along the north edge of Rattlesnake Canyon within a mile or two of South Dakota. While those were spring hunts, I suspect the elk will be there in the fall too.
like others said it is a small area most all of it is forest, Bugle magazine recently released a write up on the black hills elk population had it somewhere around 2500 head roaming from devils tower area to moskee to south dakota. So there are a decent amount of elk but its just a tougher hunt with all the trees and lack of bugles. Ive never heard an elk bugle over there and know some people that hunt and lived in sundance a majority of there life and have only heard a handful. Good thing about the area is there are alot of nice old logging roads to walk in on. If you hunt early watch your gps stay high elevation and walk in on some logging roads as far away from any surrounding roads as you can.
