Landowner Gift(s)

I'm just looking for some ideas for a landowner gift. We were lucky enough to get some private land access this year for our antelope area. They aren't even charging us. As a matter of fact they won't even be there while we are and told us where we should camp, a few rules of the ranch if you will, and basically to just have a good time and drop the coupons on their doorstep.

I had considered leaving a bottle of some fine KY Bourbon with the coupons. But I'd hate to offend someone. Any ideas? Or do you think the Bourbon would be a nice gesture?

I really don't have time to make up a batch of jerky or anything like that. Plus it may spoil or bring unwanted pests onto their front porch lol.

Find the best steak house within reasonable driving distance. Buy them a gift certificate large enough for them to have a great dinner there. I have tried many other landowner gifts but unless you know their preferred drink or anything else about them, I would stay safe. I'm betting they will appreciate it. Where are you hunting, I may be able to help?

While antelope hunting last year we noticed the rancher using a cheappair of 10x25 pocket binos while looking for some lost sheep. Next year when we go back we plan on giving him a pair of vortex diamondbacks.

^^^^ Good recommendation. A "C" note aint a bad idea either. Cash is the universal language of love... If someone gave me a bottle of bourbon it wouldn't go to use therefore not a real good gift. Unless you know for a fact that's something they would appreciate.

if you can, find out if any chores need done. ie firewood needs split and stacked, fence needs repaired, potholes need filled, etc.
most people would be appreciative to this and it helps them.

I had a kid come shoot his turkey off of my place. His first turkey, they volunteered to split firewood for me. I didn't take them up on it, but atleast the gesture was there.

It depends on the kind of people you're dealing with on what would be the best option. Money might work, ham/turkey, work trade, booze, binocs. Deal with one where the best option is to put off an evening of hunting and go to a community gathering with a prepared dish.

As a land owner myself, I would appreciate the dinner gift card the most, especially if they offered the hunt with no strings attached. Cash kind of cheapens up their very generous gesture, but a nice dinner out (which most ranchers don't get to do very often) will leave a lasting pleasant memory. Plus it can be enjoyed by the whole family, where a gift such as binoculars or other hard goods will likely only be used by one member. Your thoughtfulness in trying to get an appropriate gift means a LOT! That is my two centavos, take it for what is worth.

Thanks for the ideas. That's kind of what I was thinking about the bourbon. Its traditional to give that out as a gesture here. Mainly because that is representative of our state. Well that and horses. And I can't hardly bring a horse :)

I'll be NW of Casper on their ranch. And they live on the premisses. About a hour and a half from Casper approximately. And that's also the closest city that would have anything in the gift card department if I were guessing.

Most decent restaurants will write out a gift certificate for you in any amount you wish. Just a thought. Also many of us here in the wide open spaces have to drive an hour or more just to get to town, let alone a nice restaurant!

Well I think the consensus is a gifted dinner. That's what we'll do. Thanks all. Maybe someone else searching the forums will find this helpful.

I was in the same position as you are. I noticed the rancher drinking bud light so I bought him a thirty pack. I just sent him some NY apples as well. If your not sure they will drink the gift I would definitely get a gift card for dinner. I like that idea and will be using that next year!

I have good luck with sending Omaha Steaks. They ship anywhere on dry ice, and they are a nice follow up to your hunting year. I generally wait a month or so, and I've had really good responses from landowners. Generally between $50 and $100 bucks. It is something people really enjoy but would seldom buy for themselves.

Engideer I like the Omaha steaks idea. In the past for the landowner/farmer that let's us hunt I've bought him a sleeve or two of copenhagen(he likes a dip of snuff every now and then). We always buy two bottles of Red Velvet(whiskey) a $200-$300 gift certificate or cash and we always end up helping him run his hotwire fence for the cows. Some years we end up moving gates or cows or all of the above. It's easy when deer hunting cause we don't stay in the stand all day so we can help with the chores. In fact if any landowners out west like Copenhagen and Red Velvet hit me up I would love to be your supplier...lol. Will work for hunt!

Cobb, the Poor Boys Steakhouse in Casper is the best damn steak house I've ever had a meal at!! I'd highly recommend getting one for there!
Good Luck on the hunt bud!!
Perfect for our situation. And I guess now I'll have to stop and eat there to inspect the quality before buying a certificate haha. Thanks!
