Well the stars finally lined up for me to go on my first Shiras (any actually) Moose hunt. I found out yesterday I drew a OIL moose tag and I'm really excited to learn all I can about Idaho moose hunting.

Has anyone that frequents this forum successfully hunted moose in Idaho? I drew a west side unit so it will be thick country. I am expecting my best technique will be calling during the rut. Any thoughts on optimum rut timing?

The season is 8/30 thru 11/23 and I plan to make as many trips as it takes to find a really nice bull. When would you go?

That will be a fun hunt, i drew in 2007,and shot a 45 incher, in unit 14 on October 2nd. They best time to hunt is September 20- about October 10th. The rut is in full swing, and they really come to the call. Good luck!

When I had a moose tag in NE Washington, the first part of October the bulls were rutting good. When I killed my bull at the end of October there were 4 bulls with 8 cows and still showing signs of rutting activity in the area. I've heard later can be better as the Bulls are grouped up more so you can pick the best one . All moose look big when they are slobbering and coming in at ten yards, look at its of pics and figure out what size bull you want to get ahead of time. That's my advice.

Thanks for all the input so far guys!

I'm headed up in June for my first scouting trip and to get a better idea what I'm dealing with. Been studying the heck out of Shiras Moose on the internet and have a pretty good idea of the bull I would like to kill.

Nice pics Joe. Good luck! Looks like you might want to pick up an elk, whitetail, bear, and a wolf tag as well. Lots of animals on that trail camera. Maybe at least a wolf?? How cool would that be?

Camp...

Some trail cam pictures...

This little guy kept me up at night grunting next to camp...

The first bull moose I've ever seen! It was hard to pass on him even though he doesn't have well formed paddles. Still a very impressive animal.
