Anyone have any experience with a grizzly fence? Was thinking about Wyoming region f. Want to pack in, but would probably need a fence to get any sleep! Any advise, brand names?

Counter Assault and UDAP Both offer Kits.

Any good 4- D battery charged energizer will work to power the fence. Stafix, Gallagher, Premier, Speedrite, Tru-Test are good names.

I use a Speedrite AN90 to keep my horses in. It is plenty hot for bear work ( with a good ground)

I've backpacked in the Bob Marshalls and Yellowstone in bear country. If you truly keep a clean camp, you shouldn't have any problems. And I mean clean. Freeze dried meals, no cooking, nothing. Make noise when walking in close quarters, and have bear spray. If you kill something...that is when I'd get concerned. Read above...clean camp. Don't camp along travel corridors like stream bottoms. This is all if you are backpacking in. If you have horse, hell you can bring a generator and setup anything you want. Thousands of people use the west, and very few have bear encounters. And carry bear spray just in case. If all else fails, run faster than your partner, just kidding of course.

We used to use an electric fence with two strands of electric fence tape to keep the horses in. We'd put our tent in one corner and never had any issues with bears coming to the tent. However the bears would raise heck at the meat pole in the middle of the night...

Thanks guys, i looked at the udap and the whole thing is only 3.7 lbs. I was just thinking it would be as safe staying back in there with a fence as it would be walking in and out morning and evening, i dont know. Would probably sleep better if i had one.

This was my "Bear shelter" I made on a backpack hunt. While I was setting up camp in a new area I herd a noise and when I looked up there was a bear 50' away. I was in a part of ID that has Grizzlies I cant say if it was a Grizz or not. Im not sure who was more surprised me or him and I never saw him again in my time there. Im not sure my "Bear Shelter" made me much safer either but it sure made me feel alot better!!!

Looks like a bear den , it probably just wanted to crawl in and take a nap!
My thinking at the time was it put something more between me and the bear and it would make some noise and slow the bear down enough to wake me up and shoot the bear before it ate me. Luckily I didnt have to test my theory. Its kinds unnerving when you are setting up camp and a bear shows up!

I will see if I can dig up pictures, but Mike grew up with putting camp inside the trees in bear country. Snags deter them because them so pitching the tent inside on was an old time bear fence.
