My group of 2-4 guys is looking to go on our first hunt out west. For our first hunt we want to try to just do a cow meat hunt. We cannot do they hunt from late September though Mid November so would have to be before or after that. If anyone has nay friendly advice it would be appreciated. Thanks.

you cant hunt between sep and mid nov? idaho has a desert tag during august, but its hot as hell.
The life of a farmer haha. Harvest usually runs that time of year. While its possible I could start later or finish early I cannot plan on that.

Even a cow elk hunt can be humbling when you have zero experience in an area. There are some good hunts in December but between weather and access issues they are not easy to pull off in general. I would recommend paying a trespass fee to get on private land if you have to hunt that late. Otherwise I would make your first western trip for antelope. Everyone will get to shoot at something and you will have much nicer weather. Allow yourself a day or two to scout for a future elk hunt so your not going in blind when the time comes.

What can I expect on these hunts?
IMO 4th season and late season hunts in Colorado will have snow, animals looking to get away from pressure to rest, maybe migrations start or are ongoing, resident herds will be on their winter range already. Overall easy hunt for someone that can glass large areas, hike in 1.5-2 miles off the atv trails and main roads. CDOW has some really nice tools on their web page for planning.

Here in western Wyoming there are a lot of early and late season cow tags that should work for you. Late season finds the elk down low and there are both private and public lands where you can find the elk.

We may look into doing a late season cow hunt with an outfitter for our first trip not sure if that's necessary or not though.

There is a guide out of Jackson hole uses horses and charges 1200 almost garranteed as you can get in hunting. Also you can just buy a tag when you get there!

MM,
If you can go that route.... that is one of the best 1st hunt ever. Lots of learning, seeing animals, usually shooting one and meat for the freezer! I take a lot of first time kid hunters on hunts similar to this, makes for a great first experience.

If you want to take a crack at archery, then Utah might be a good option as there are unlimited over the counter elk tags with a season that fits your needs (mid Aug through early Sept). Success on such a hunt is far from a sure thing though....
