I will be hunting in zone Y in Wyoming in a couple weeks here. I am wondering what type of cell phone service I should expect? I am a graduate student and need to complete a quiz at some point during my trip. I have a hotspot I can activate on my cell phone so I can use my computer. I just need decent cell service in order to do this.

Depends. You probably will have to move around some to find the signal strength you need. Lots of areas in Wy don't have great coverage. Also depends on you cell phone provider.

While you close to Sheridan or Buffalo the service is decent but you don't have to travel too far to get into spotty coverage. As a general rule- Don't count on much signal in most hunting areas anywhere in the state of Wyoming. With less than 500k people in the state, cell phone companies don't put up many towers.

I'll second Hilltop and CC as usual, just to give fairly local opinion. I think they are pretty right on about the cell service. I would say you will have to go into town to be sure you have the signal strength and consistent signal that doesn't drop randomly to complete your quiz. Then you might as well park at McDonalds for the free WiFi.

Thanks guys, I am trying to get my professor to let me take the quiz early. If that is a not go it looks like I will have to head to a McDonalds for an hour. Thanks guys!

That is dedication there. I too am struggling with the same school/work/hunting conflicts. I have sat in a blind at least 10 times close to home and only once have I not brought some form of schoolwork with. Good luck on your hunt and get that damn quiz out of the way so you can forget about everything back home and enjoy the outdoors free of stress.

Seems like I can usually find enough service to make a phonecall or send a text, when I'm up pretty high, But I doubt you'd get enough service to be able to log in and take a quiz. I think I'd roll into town for a few and take it.

Agree on the dedication, balancing work/school/hunting wasn't very easy for me. Once, I did a phone interview while sitting in a turkey blind! And, they still offered the job!

A place I hunt in CO is like that, except for the one time I was stalking a group of bucks without any thought of my cell phone and the dang thing started ringing.
