I forgot and left a camera out all winter and ended up with a black coyote on the card. I am not fond of coyotes at all, but he is striking. He would look even better mounted in the hunting room!

I've never seen this before so I did a little lazy Google research.

"The coloring of the coyote varies considerably according to location. In the northernmost parts of its range coyotes can be pale to almost white in color. In the west they tend to be a rich reddish hue with black markings. In the plains states they are plain grayish brown. The occasional black coyote is seen in the great plains states and in the eastern states; those may actually be the result of hybridization with wolves. It would take DNA analysis to be sure."

I would hunt him hard.

Yes, it is a coydog, a cross with a domestic dog and a coyote. Fur buyers won't give you a dime for it but some taxidermists will give $200 + for a really nice one. Never heard of a coyote crossing with a wolf. I would think the wolf would rather kill the coyote and tear it to shreds.

I thought he looked pretty cool too. He is part of a decent sized group in that area, and like most of you, I believe he is a dog/coyote cross. We have a pretty strong deer herd in this area, but we have quite a few coyotes too. I usually don't hunt them hard until after deer season. I may have to change that this year.

I know of a couple killed around here. This may be completely coincidentle, but I've never heard of any being male. Suppose it could be like calico cats being female?

Although there are melanistic coyotes that are almost black, along with many other color variations associated with geographic region. I would definitely lean towards it being a coyote-dog cross based on it's physical characteristics. Pretty cool looking canine that's for sure. kind of a neat surprise on your pics. Congrats!
