1,000s of Stolen Guns Recovered

In Pageland, SC a man was arrested a week ago for possession of 5-6,000 stolen guns, plus 500 chain saws and other stuff. http://www.thestate.com/news/local/crime/article41913897.html

All the guns have their serial #s. Not many thieves go to the trouble to file them off, especially on rifles. Over the next few weeks, those will be entered in the FBI database.

So, if you ever have a gun stolen or know anyone that has, make sure to ask a local law enforcement official to check the FBI database NCIC list for guns, one of 21 NCIC lists the FBI keeps. Wait a bit so it can get through the process. You can't check it yourself as far as I know. https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ncic/ncic_files

Of course, that does no good if you don't know your serial #s, so go now and write them down and put them on your computer somewhere. Pictures would also be good. It's a small amount of time well spent.

I once had four guns stolen that I left out of sight behind the seat in my truck while I stayed in a motel, including two from my dad with a lot of sentimental value. It can happen to you too.

Unclaimed guns will be destroyed, he said. “We hope we can get as much of this stuff as possible back to its proper owners,” Scott said.
“We’re just glad that we were able to take that many guns off the street that could cause anyone any harm.”

This quote bothers me. Its hard to imagine how anyone could have that many guns. I dont see any proof in the article that they are all stolen. Im not saying they are not stolen, just it seems they have jumped to some conclusions because they are guns that they wouldnt jump too if they were something else. Will be interesting to see how the investigation goes.

You'd be surprised to know that many gun-owners don't know the make of their rifles much less a serial number.

I sold a very nice old Remington custom rifle to a guy that wrecked his truck and LE picked-up the rifle at the crash site. He had to ID it to get it back and he had to call me to ID it for him, DUH!!!!!!

I agree that the idea of getting guns off the street doesn't ring true because while the guy was apparently a well-known fence and the police had been after him for possession of stolen property charges, he apparently never sold the stuff he bought, just hoarded it. He apparently paid $40 per gun, not exactly a dealer price, not even a pawn shop price.

So, it was actually just the opposite - stolen guns were taken off the street (and people's trucks, homes and garages) by his hoarding them, not by the raid. Bizarre!

When they raided his place, they just didn't know what an incredible stash of goods he had, enough goods of all kinds to fill a 40-foot semi trailer!

Sounds to me like the police in the area turned a blind eye towards this guy. I read that he had stolen chainsaws and other stolen items on his front lawn. What kind of a neighborhood is that? The guy had to be known as a fence locally. Sounds like this town needs a new police chief.

I have a lot of respect for law enforcement, they have a mostly boring and sometimes very dangerous job and have to deal with people at their worst and with that growing bunch of people that has lost all respect for authority. Today, they are even targeted for murder. I don't know what the deal is in SC but like everyone else, some are a whole lot better at their job than others.
