So I did not draw any elk tags or permits. What to do?

This is the first year in maybe the last 6 or so that I did not draw a NR elk license/permit/tag. Being out of practice as to the strategy moving forward for OTC, secondary draws, alternate draws, etc., I am looking for recommendations. I know about CO OTC and MT alternates list, but am looking for other advice/recommendations. Would consider guided but only as a last resort.

    Thanks

I second the CO leftover list. There are still some options in Idaho also. There are a few MT elk combos that will go on sale here in a few days, they'll probably sell fast.

BTW, how did your hunt in 2017 go?

Ended up not doing the WY hunt in 2017. Went general license in MT and which ended up a minor disaster with weather.

so you said there will be a few MT elk combo licenses going on sale. I thought MT leftovers/returns were put into a drawing for which applications are being accepted between May 15 and June 30. As I understand it, the drawing is to establish a list and as licenses become available, MT FWP will go down the list one by one until all returned licenses are resold. Is that what you are referring to when you say they will go on sale?

I would love to hear the story to pass the time. Perhaps others can learn from your experience or at least share in your misery.

There are several hundred of the Montana elk tags being returned that will be available soon. I saw something about it on hunt talk.

Guess a lot of guys draw the combo and return the elk portion.

I'd gladly go hunt Montna with a general tag. I wouldn't take a free Colorado OTC tag and I live 20 miles from the border.
