I got a phone call a few weeks back from a friend in Alaska asking me if I wanted to join them on a Caribou hunt north of the Brooks Range. I figured it would be fun to share the experience from the start of planing, logistics and getting to Alaska from the Midwest and everything involved to do a DIY Caribou hunt!
My PTO is approved for two weeks off and getting ready to book flights! I do consider my self still a rookie at Western hunting and enjoy learning from my mistakes!
This will be a rifle hunt from the Dalton Highway via a Airboat!
This is from the trip in 2013. It?s been too long!
See where this Journey will go! Alaska is a adventure in its self!

Flights
So for plane flights, Alaskan Air flies out of KC. So that will provide great flights from KC to Seattle to Anchorage in August. I got a Alaskan Airlines card which you give you reward miles, than you put a little money on the card. Believe $500, you would spend anyways gas and groceries; since I have kids that was easy. $75 annual card fee and $12 fed tax and that?s it for flight to Anchorage! I?ve flown with them before and they are great! Even flown a dog with them!

Sounds fun! Take your fishing gear too, some nice grayling and char in that river!
Good luck on your hunt!
I have the card also and will be flying from Denver to fairbanks in august.
Saved me 600 as my son flies for free on the annual companion fair offer.

Hunter25, can?t wait to here your trip report too! Feel free to add to the post if you like. I the companion ticket is awesome when two people are flying. We used one in 2017 to go fishing up there. What type of hunt you guys doing?
I will admit since I?m going with a few AK residents and we are hunting from a airboat, we are not counting ounces. But, I should have all my own stuff. So I?m going to keep the weight down in hopes to bring Caribou meat back. Most of my gear works in the Midwest too. I will make a rough draft gear list and what I plan to add! My outer jacket and pants need replaced.
