That is definitely the way to do it Scott! Keep shooting an elk until he's down for good.

That kind of plays into something I have been pondering, how can 60% of those that replied to the poll have a 1 shot "average". Maybe not too many successful elk hunters.

The first few elk that I killed I did with one shot.....................but then those others that were 3 or 4 shots drove my average up a little.
If you don't care where you are, you are not lost....

Not to get technical, but by the time I'm done at the range multiple times before season, its way more than 5, even if I only shoot the targeted animal once.

I am one of those guys who responded with "one shot." However in retrospect the last two bull elk that I killed were each shot 3X, they were DOA with the 1st BOOM, but were still moving, so BOOM, BOOM continued. Added to the number of singles, that scews the average to 1.3397485.

1.3397485 rounds down to "one shot" ... I'd say you're good to go

Hunting terrain has to have some impact on this. In heavy timber it is more difficult to get follow up shots. In open country I could see where guys would feel compelled to use follow up shots more frequently. A good majority of my elk were one shot kills where a follow up just wasn't possible due to the timber/terrain.
