Anybody going to Hot August Nights?

As it says... Anybody stayed at the Sands recently? The pictures of the rooms make them look big and really nice, like recently renovated, but for some reason, I suspect the one we'll get won't be that big (or nice).

Mystery Ranch Mountain Ruck initial review

I just wanted to post this in case anybody was considering one... I just got this ruck after carrying a modified large ALICE pack for years. The ALICE had plenty of padding, so it was comfortable from that aspect, but it was heavy and the frame length is fixed. The MR ruck is about 10lbs...

Light(er) weight rain/wind gear w/ GoreTex or equivalent performance and durability

Is there any such beast? I'm carrying the original military Gore Tex jacket and pants (ECWCS) right now. I have the newer generation military jacket and pants (APECS), they're a bit lighter, but I can't use the ones I currently have for hunting, but I may get another set that I can. Those...

    Specialty skinning knives

I'm currently carrying a Kabar with a sharpener, I know it's not the most ergonomically efficient way to do it, but I already have both I can use the Kabar for other things (making wood art, fighting bears, etc.). So, are the specialty knives with the blades that much better to justify spending...

    Epic meat bars

The bison w/ cranberry and bacon is awesome, I tried a beef one, its good, but I didn't like it as much as the bison. I looked at their website, they have 9 different kinds, including venison, lamb, chicken, etc. They're about the size of a protein bar, they're not really jerky (more moist...

    Empty Pack Weight

What's everybody running for empty pack weight for a large, external (metal) frame pack? I'm talking Large 6000+ cubic inches, equivalent to a large ALICE pack with extra pockets and such. That doesn't include water bladders or anything else. Thanks.

    Good Reno Buffets

We're going to Reno for Hot August Nights, we'll be looking for some good buffets while we're there. Or maybe I should phrase that as what are the nasty or not-worth-the-money buffets we should stay away from? (I know Terrible's is one, it lived up to it's name the one time I got talked into...

    Pig hunting on private land

Quick question, though I knew the answer but... I talked to a lady, her and her husband have a ranch out by Paso Robles. They have a pig problem, to the point that they have been getting depredation permits to kill them. If I get a pig tag(s), can I hunt on their property with their (written)...

    Stashing water, etc.

I talked with some people who mentioned stashing supplies (water and even food) while out scouting an area prior to heading out for a multi-day hunt. Anybody here done it and anybody have any recommendations or things to watch out for that don't seem obvious up front?

New hunter and good luck to everybody for this season

I've been out of the loop here for a while, been a little busy, Sep 18th we had a baby boy and he and mom are home and doing well. My wife was pregnant again and spent a few months in the hospital, basically under observation because she had been having some contractiosn early on and we live so...

    Motorcycles...

Anybody here ever used a motorcycle for backcountry hunting? I don't mean day hunting off of a bike, trolling for deer, but using a bike like a pack mule to get into and out of an area.

    Saw 1 live buck

In X-10, at 8:00pm, 50 feet in front of my truck while I was driving through Kennedy Meadows on the way home Friday night. Figures.

Lightweight, windproof/waterproof and SILENT out layer

Looking for suggestions. I have a Marmot Primaloft jacket that a good insulating layer, I picked up a Frogg Toggs jacket cheap, thinking it would be quiet, but it's pretty noisy in the woods. So, I'm looking for an outer layer to go over the Marmot. Thanks

Quick north end of X-10 report

I went up through Horseshoe Meadow on opening day and pretty much wasted my time. I don't know if I'm getting old, carrying too much gear or both. I was running heavy (90+lb pack plus rifle, pistol and odds and ends, so well over 100lbs) and wiped myself out getting up to Trail Pass. I saw...

    Permethrin

I may be a little late on this, but I didn't know that permethrin was used for horses and other livestock. You can get it in 10% concentration from a feed store/ACE hardware for about $8 a pint and dilute it for use on your clothes and gear.

Making multiple trips to haul a kill back

Something I've been thinking about but been forgetting to post. If I kill a buck, I'm most likely going to have to make a couple of trips to get it and my gear back. It will be October and at 10,000+ feet , so I'm not so worried about the temperature, etc. I'll obviously have to hang any meat...

    Lightning Safety

I found this paper about lightning safety, it focuses on backcountry and other outdoor areas (water, etc) when you can't get to a safe area. I was out on the back side of a mountain on Labor Day weekend when a thunderstorm rolled in. It was pretty cool listening to the thunder roll across the...
