    Need opinions on backcountry communication

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase something to be able to communicate with my wife back home when I'm in the mountains and out of cell service. What have you guys tried and what do you like/not like about them? I already have a GPS unit so I don't really need another, just a good way to...

    Delicious Venison Chili

I used a recipe off of 'From Field to Plate' for his venison chili and it was FANTASTIC! This would be especially good if you have family or friends who don't like the 'wild' flavor of wild game. Tastes just like beef. Throw some avacado and sour cream on top and ooooooo you're good to go...

    D5 Buck

I skipped the opener and went up midweek to D5. It turned out to be a good day and I shot my biggest buck yet. It's a pretty good buck for an OTC California zone. He has a 26" inside spread. Shot him just after dawn with a 7mm mag about 150 yards away. He ran 15 feet.

    Jerky

I made some venison jerky with the last of my deer from last year. I used a marinade with beer, Soy Sauce, Worchestershire, and lots of black pepper. It's good, and doesn't have any gamey flavor but I'm not a huge fan of the taste of worchestershire. What homeade seasonings/recipes do you guys...

    Comfort in the backcountry

Does anyone bring along things for 'comfort'? Like a backpacking chair, pillow, or anything else? A friend of mine got a small lightweight backpacking chair that looked really nice at the end of a long day, as I sat on the ground and he was comfortable.

What's your oldest piece of hunting gear?

Like the title said, I'd be curious what item of hunting gear people have had the longest and still use. It's so easy to get caught up in upgrading gear and buying new 'better' stuff that we can lose sight and appreciation for things that have stood the test of time and use and still work just...

Bow suggestions for a tall person

I'm going to get a new bow and I'd like suggestions or opinions on bows for people 6'5" and above. By no means an I a bow hunting purist, it's something I enjoy when I have the time and my knowledge on the subject is limited. Any tall hunters here want to chime in I'd appreciate it! Thank you

What's your secret to bowhunting open country?

I'm planning on bowhunting mule deer up high again this year. It's very open country, usually steep with a breeze blowing. But it's the only spot I know I can find deer. As a relatively new hunter, and even newer bow hunter, I'm wondering how do you guys hunt in this situation? What's your...

    Close Calls while Hunting?

I'm sure most hunters have close calls about something dangerous that could, or did happen to them while hunting. Or perhaps it was 'a friend' and you would like to pass on the story. Anything to help pass the time until next hunting season! One of my close calls was when I shot a muley buck...

    Aw yeah!

I packed in 6+ miles last weekend in the high country in D6 and filled my tag. There was a little snow on the ground on the north sides of the mountains, and temps were from 50 degrees to 30. Great hiking weather! In archery season and the opening weekend of rifle season combined, I saw 16...

    Call your shots!

Well the California drawing has closed and hopefully we'll find out soon what zones we'll be hunting. This is going to be a fun thread where we all try to call our shot, and then come back this fall and see how close we all were to getting it right! Now's the time to year to get excited and...

    NV Zone Question

Question for you Nevada Mule Deer experts... I have zero points and don't live in NV, are there any zones that could be drawn on the first try? I know rifle would probably take several years, but what about archery? I thought I found some, but those turn out to be a longbow hunt. I have a...

Laugh at the noob! Spot and stalk questions...

I'm a relative bowhunting noob, and I want to get some input from the experts here! :) Question: How do you go about your spot and stalk? Mainly talking about mule deer, but other animals could apply. When you locate an animal you want to shoot, what do you do next? Take off your shoes and...

How many of you guys archery hunt the X-zones?

Let's get this California section going! I know the success rate for archery hunting is much lower than general season, but in the premium X-zones, a person could hunt there more often... I have 1 point and instead of waiting to draw a rifle tag, I'm thinking about just applying for an archery...

Has anyone filmed their own backcountry hunt?

I was thinking how much of a challenge it would be to film myself hiking in 8-20 miles at 10,000+ elevation while hunting for mule deer this upcoming year. Does anyone have experience with this? I think it could be done with minimal expense. There's some nice, small video cameras to be had...
