We have a couple hides that are self tanned. Just flesh them, salt, once dry they go into a salt water alum bath depending on how thick the hide is, then dry it. Got a rabbit hide that's about 5 years old fine this way, still looks good!

5, I actually put a euro mount bull elk on one and hung it up in my shed for a decoration. I use 2 for ther most part, 1 as a spare or for someone to use if they don't have as good of one, the other collects dust and spiders.
