Has anyone seen dew claws this long before?

This picture is the front legs. The back leg dew claws were about 2 inches long.

Elk in South Dakota. I think he was pretty old. His hooves and teeth were in tuff shape.

Wow. Nope never. I've seen some very long hooves on animals before from them living in sandy areas but never that.

My guess is a genetic mutation. I have seen pictures of horses who are kept in small stalls and whose hooves will grow into long curls like that. However, hooves continuously grow since they are intended to be constantly worn down by normal wear and tear. The dew claws have minimal contact with the ground, so as far as I know, a dewclaw has no purpose to "grow" in order to keep up with wear. This year I saw a 4 horned buck antelope. There was actually a second set of horns growing off the skull next to the other set. Again, just one of those genetic mutations that show up as a "freak of nature".
