I was surprised also. Made me feel better about stainless.
XCRs are stainless
You might consider this combo. I have a Winchester 70 Extreme Weather in .300 WSM. Standard with the Extreme Weather is an easily adjustable trigger, fluted stainless barrel, and a Bell & Carlson stock. I added lightweight Talley one piece bases/rings and a Leupold VX3 in 3.5-10X. Weighs an ounce or two under 8 lbs. I handload 150 gr Accubonds and my rifle shoots 5/8" groups at 100 yds. I think retail on Extreme Weather's are around $1100, now. I use it for antelope and mule deer. Load it with heavier Accubonds and you would have an elk gun.
If you are looking for a one and done type of thing I would take a look at the Nosler trophy grade rifles. My wife won one last year and the thing is awesome. It has a great barrel, stock and is completely weather proof. It is defiantly something that will be with our family for a long time.
