There are zero tags available in the random draw for NR in unit 22. That means unless you have max points it is impossible to draw. This is even true of the Special drawing. It will be many years before your wife will have ANY chance of drawing a unit 22 tag. Crazy system, but the points needed to draw this unit will continue to climb (and stay at max) for the foreseeable future. And the hunting isn't appreciably different than the other units mentioned.
Llp, I was looking at the odds again and your right it would be several years years even at the special price before the max pointers will be out of the pool. Then you still have to draw with the one behind group, so I am going to let her decide. I sure am glad I go to the general units every year, less pre draw stress. Do you know anything about 118? Access in 118 is reasonable, but you will have to pay attention. Most (not all) of the checkerboard is railroad land open to hunting, but some time on the ground would be helpful so you understand the issues before you draw.
HiMTnHnter, you beat me to the punch. The only areas of the checkerboard in 118 that are open to access without getting landowner permission are the Chain Lakes WGFD unit on the northwest corner, and a shallow strip of land along Highway 287 that has an easement through it for the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Neither area holds much in the way of elk (Chain Lakes was purchased for antelope winter range.)
There is a misconception regarding the checkerboard along the historic UP Right-of-Way. There is no "railroad" land, and private land in this strip is NOT open to hunting without permission. The majority of private sections were sold to other private landowners years and years ago. The railroad only kept select strips of stock-driveway, which were owned by UP Resources which have now became Anadarko Petroleum through a merger. Historically and presently, UP Resources and Anadarko allow the leaseholder to determine access. The only leaseholder that I am aware of that allows access without permission is the Rock Springs Grazing Association around Rock Springs (west of unit 118.) All of the leaseholders and private landowners in 118 require permission for access.
There is block public land in the north half of the unit that can be accessed, but the majority of the elk in the unit stay in the south portion, and most stick to the ranches that charge a significant trespass fee, especially when the rifle season starts.
Be carefull of taking advice gained on the all-knowing internet, buyer beware with these tags.
Well that pretty much narrows it down. Thanks for the reply's, 22 or 111 sounds like what we are looking for in central Wyoming. Hopefully in the next few years she can draw so we can go hunt some new ground.
Im having the same debate as a resident this year, 22 or 111. ive hunted 19 for the past two years and killed a bull both years but want to explore new territory. Leaning towards 111 because of draw odds but would rather have a 22. cant draw if you dont apply i suppose. good luck to you!
I agree , If your name is not in the hat you cant win. It will be worth the wait either way and I cant wait no matter how long it takes to draw a good area. Into this "Investment" six years, whats another six? Good luck to you A David let me know if you draw and what you pull out of either area.
