I lived and hunting in Calif for 35 years. Never messed with lions. Mostly deer, and came to Colorado for elk during those years.
Much easier now. I'm just 20minutes from my elk hunting areas.
I've used a .357 for both mountain lion and mule deer. It is very marginal for deer, and I now use a .41mag or .44 mag.
I have hunted with handguns quite a bit,
Savage Striker in .243
T.C. Contender in .45 Long Colt,
T.C. Encore in .307 Winchester,
I have a couple more Contenders and a few different barrels, along with a couple more Encore barrels. I have also killed a lot of squirrels and rabbits with a Colt New Frontier .22 and a Ruger Standard auto .22.
This is my idea of a handgun.
Had one for years and loved it!

Ruger super redhawk .44 mag topped w/ leupold 4x ler and pachmyer grips. I have only shot 2 deer with it but its main use is for bear and lion protection during summer packing trips with the horses, I don't use the scope with it when I ride. It has a nice magna port on it and had the trigger smoothed. I want to shoot my bear when I draw that tag.
I have taken a pronghorn doe with my XP-100 in 284 Winchester, but I wasn't really all that happy with that pistol.
I am going to build a couple of new ones when I get back to the states on BAT XP-Length actions in 250 Savage, 6mm BR, 358 Win, and 6.5 Creedmor.
I have a Raging Bull in 454, but I haven't shot anything with it.
