First Muley Hunt!
I drew a nonres Montana big game combo tag this year. It will be my first western hunt. My dad is coming to run video and hopefully help carry out meat. I'll be hunting in 391 on a friends land that has a resident population. We plan on hunting around the 10th of September. What can I expect the mule deer to be doing this time of year?
Congratulations! I've never hunted muleys that time of year. We usually head out 2nd week of November. So, I imagine they'll be up to their usual routine, seeing as it's a while before the rut kicks off. Best thing right now is surveillance. Get some eyes on them (or have your friends w/property check up on them from time to time) so that you know what kind of pattern they're following. Google Earth is a great tool for planning out specific hunts. Know ahead of time exactly what land you'll be allowed on so you can have some sort of plan. Another thing to realize is that in MT we have been blessed with TONS of public land. Get familiar with the nearby nat'l forest, as well, and be ready to take a 300-yard (or more) shot! Good luck!
Muleys should be in bachelor herds and in a feeding/bedding routine in early September. Either bed them and stalk them or set up on their path from feeding to bedding areas.
Congratulations, Jarred!! Make sure you have a light tripod and a spare battery or two for the camera. Tell your dad not to be afraid to let the camera run...even if he thinks he is just recording dead time or nothing exciting. You will be glad it was captured and it will give you plenty of film to edit for a great video!
