View Full Version : Eastmans' Get "Hunting Fit" Challenge

02-22-2011, 10:13 AM
Nothing like a cold winter to trigger that appetite to pack on some extra "insulation". I know that after working my tail off last summer and going from 245 down to 210, I'm now back to 232. Well, it's time to get going! We're starting our diets/workouts and want to take this opportunity to invite you to be a part of it. So here's the deal: 1) Post your current weight; 2) Post your goal weight; 3) Post any other fitness goals you have; 4) Post some of your strategies of how you are going to get there. Make sure and use the same scale and weigh yourself with the same approximate clothing. We'll be putting together some prize packages on September 1 for those who have accomplished the most. This is all on the honor system, so no cheating! :D

02-22-2011, 10:14 AM
1. Current weight – 232
2. Goal weight – 210 (I’ll be lifting weights, too, so in order to lose those 22 net lbs., I’ll have to lose about 30 lbs. of “table muscle”.
3. Other goal – improve my overall endurance on the StairMaster over what I did last year.
4. Strategies – 1300-1500 calories a day, hit the gym 5 days a week (For cardio, I’ll mostly hit the StairMaster because it is awesome for increasing the muscular and hiking endurance for my legs, but I’ll also mix in some running/power walking). Also going to get back into weightlifting a bit.

02-22-2011, 10:36 AM
1) Current weight - 232
2) Goal Weight - 195
3) Other Goals - Be able to complete an entire 5k running with no shin splints is one of the big ones. Make the guys I'm hunting with in Montana this fall wonder if I'm part mountain goat.
4) Strategy - Crossfit 4-6 days a week while throwing in 1-2 runs or hikes a week. I'll also be shooting my bow quite a bit during practice and tournaments as well. I'm already in the best shape of my life, but it could be better. My diet will consist of 2000-2500 calories a day of mostly fat and protein with Saturday being a refeed day.

02-22-2011, 10:56 AM

4. Strategy- Hit the gym 4-5 times a week. Be able to run 10-15 miles per week. Try and control my eating. Kinda hard cause my wife is pregnant with our first child, so when she eats, I tend to eat also.

2) 185
3) Increase over all fitness, fit into 34" pants again (currently a tight 36"), run a marathon in the fall of 2011

02-22-2011, 11:18 AM
MrKrabs - I noticed you posted you were having a problem with shin splints, I too used to have the same problem. There is a solution, there are specific exercises that will help...many can be done while sitting at desk (ie place feet flat on the floor, lift your toes of the floor (keeping your heal planted) as many times as you can for one minute, do this at least twice a day). The biggest difference is to change your running style. Research "pose" running on the internet, in the beginning it is a killer on your calves, but you won't have any pain in your ankles, shins, or knees. Switching styles was a complete game changer for me. Best of luck!

02-22-2011, 11:27 AM
Current weight 240
Goal 210
Going with the P90X program right now along with running some hills to try to get ready for my elk hunt this year in Colorado.

2) Goal - 205
3) Other Goals - Compete in as many 3D shoots as possible this year. Compete in a local Sprint Triathlon in late summer. Spend more time on the hill hiking and scouting this year for elk.
4) Strategies - Hitting the gym 3 times a week for weights and stair climber, running, biking and swimming once the weather warms up on off days from the gym. Eating much better and at regular intervals. I eat the bulk of my calories after 4 oclock now and need to eat through-out the day.

3) Run a couple of 5Ks and a 10K with my wife this summer
4) Been slowly getting back into the grind of things, but its a process. Never been a runner of any sort, and the thought of running makes me uneasy, so this will be a big hurdle to cross. I will be lifting and lots of cardio as a workout but my biggest setback is FOOD, I love food and have a wife who I swear is related to Betty Crocker.

02-22-2011, 01:49 PM

Thanks for the info! I've been watching videos about chi running which seems very similar. I'm definitely a heel striker and step way out in front of my hips which is causing my problem.

Current weight 205
Goal Weight 170
Going to start with cardio. I will be running 7 days a week, 3 of those 7 will be hill workouts with a weighted pack. After a couple weeks I will start doing circuit weight training the 4 days I am not doing hill workouts. Need to make sure I adjust my workouts enough and continue to up the ante in my workouts so my body doesn't get too comfortable with what I am doing. My dad always said, "If it doesn't hurt, you're probably not doing it right."

02-22-2011, 08:03 PM
Current 280lbs
Goal 260lbs
Strategy: Hit it as hard as I did last year. I was 320lbs last winter.

3. Other Goal- P90X in the morning and get the right supplements.
4. Strategy- Continue weights in the evening and incorporate the p90x program in the mornings.(Just finished P90x and think if I used it with my own weight training, I would get incredible mountain endurance.) Run 2-3 miles three days a week. Finally, start eating more to fuel the "Crazy Man" workout program.

02-22-2011, 08:44 PM
1) 218

1. Current weight - 178
2. Goal weight - I don't really have one. My goal is to get out of these size 34" pants back into the 30" sitting the closet. So, whatever it takes to get there.
3. Other goal - Improve my overall cardio and endurance. I got my butt kicked last year packing my elk hindquarter. It won't happen again!
4. Strategies - My wife and I committed to running the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial Half Marathon on May 1st; therefore, I've started an intensive 10 week training program that consists of jogging 4 times per week. I'm hoping this will motivate me to continue to work out and prepare for another round with the either deer or elk this fall! I've also started watching the number of calories consumed a day and limited myself to one soft drink a day.

02-23-2011, 08:14 AM
1) current weight 215
2) goal 185
3) Goals, overall fitness, lose 30 lbs, build upper body and core muscle, be able to hunt hard for 5 straights days in the Snake River area of Oregon this year for mule deer and the Mt St Helens area for elk if I get drawn. Do some serious multi-day backpacking trips in the summer to scout with my brother.
4) work out every day, and vary my routine, from the treadmill, to stair climber to free weights to biking and running. The hardest for me will be to change my eating habits. I am a great cook and love to entertain. I plan to eat very sensible during the week and only have a big meal once on the weekend if I have met my fitness goals for the week. Of course vension (lean meat) is always on the menu!

02-23-2011, 01:44 PM
1.) Current Wt.: 209 lbs.
2.) Goal Wt.: 195 lbs.
3.) Fitness Goals: Run the Bighorn 50k trail ultra-marathon in June.

1. Current Weight- 168
2. Goal Weight- 155
3. Other goals- Get my 6 Pack Abs back (I haven't seen them for 30 years)!
4. Strategy- Increase the intensity of my daily workouts, drop the sugar and starchy carbs, pay attention to posture when working at my desk and isometrically work abs constantly

Best of Luck,

AZ Hunter

1) current weight: 170
2) goal weight: 165
3) goals: develop cardio and endurance by running 3 - 5 mornings per week, weight training a couple times a week. I can loose the 5 pounds by eating a little better and cutting portions. Cutting back on the beer would help....but probably won't happen. I play softball twice a week, pretty much year 'round, so that helps. I also want to strengthen my core and legs for lower back support. At 52 and a bad low back, I have to build up to longer runs and more intense training. My latest inspiration is Cameron Hanes. That guy is a fitness animal ! 100mile ultra-marathons....are you kidding me!! Read his home page article at http://www.cameronhanes.com/ "Train Hard - Hunt Easy".
Any suggestions on core/low back strengthening?

02-23-2011, 08:00 PM
1 -Current Weight 260
2 - Goal weight is 230...or about 13% body fat
3 - My running goal is to be able to run 10miles without stopping. I like to play golf so I plan on walking rather then riding, I play softball at least 2 times a week during the summer and fall. I plan on starting cross-fit next month, I'm currently run 2mile about 3 days a week and plan on increasing this next month to 4 miles. The hardest part for me is I don't enjoy long distance running, but because of my love for hunting I'm using the bugle of elk as my motivation.

02-23-2011, 09:43 PM
1 - current weight 123
2 - goal weight 120
3 - Okay, I honestly don't care about losing weight, but rather just getting in the best condition for the backcountry for when September rolls around. I'm focusing on my endurance this year. In order to be ready for opening day, my fitness goal for the year is to qualify and run the Pikes Peak 1/2 marathon ascent - and to not keel over from oxygen deficiency before reaching the top. I've been training pretty hard so far and am up to 4-5 miles 3x a week. The only thing I'm wondering is if people at the gym would look at me funny if I started wearing my badlands pack on the treadmill. kidding!

1- Right now 180- (gained 25 in last 2 years).
2- goal, 160.
3- Just like to get back in the shape I was about 5 years ago, weight 155 for years and felt alot better.
never thought about these things when I was younger...guess age is creapin up!
4- I'm gonna get up and get out. Maybe ride a bike and do some spring turkey hunting in the hills.

03-10-2011, 10:06 AM
1. 255
2. 220
3. Smaller, Faster, Stronger
4. I started a fitness program about a month ago and at the rate I am going I should hit my goal by fall with a little room to spare. More exercise and a better diet goes a long way.

03-10-2011, 10:48 AM
Ok, I am currently at 344 lbs (official weight from Dr. visit last week) I started dieting and exercising last week after Dr. appointment.

I hope to get down to 200 - 225 by this fall deer season. I know its a tall order, but we'll see what happens.

I would love to be able to backpack hunt the David Long way and to do that I have to shed mass pounds. This would be a miracle if I can pull it off by this winter.

03-10-2011, 11:00 AM
1. 255
2. 220
3. Get Smaller, Faster, Stronger
4. I started with a 5-6 day a week cardio for an hour and 10-20 min circuit. If I can keep it up I should be ready for bear the 15th and keep going from there.

03-11-2011, 10:04 AM
Weigh in last night - 336 lbs

Lost 8 lbs in ten days. I have been severely limiting my food intake. I think the first 20-30 lbs are the easiest to lose when you are as over-weight as I am. I'm still shooting for 100lb loss.

RYAN - Thanks for starting this thread and encouraging me to go for it!

03-13-2011, 10:01 AM
1.Current Weight = 180
2.Goal Weight = ? (will see at the end of the summer) (IMO this shouldn't be a focus. The more you work on your routine and get in it you will find your ideal body weight. If you pick a number and hit that number your motivation and work ethics are likely to go by the way side)
3.Other goals- to do another century ride this summer or the Tour de Tahoe.
4.Cycle three days a week averaging 60-90 miles per week for four months. Continue to weight train and eat as healthy as I can. In August I will focus more on climbing and hauling a pack around.

Good job! Keep it up!!

Current weight - 225
Target weight - 195
Training techniques - varieties of: running, mountain biking, backpacking, swimming, upper body strength training, Insanity circuit, shoot my bow, restrict my diet
Measuring sticks (Goals) - compete in three local adventure races, finish in the top ten in one, group 12/12 arrows in a 4" target at 70 yards, climb the Lake Michigan sand dunes with a weighted pack for at least an hour, three times this summer (that's gonna suck!)

Great idea for a thread! Ed Cole says, "It's not real unless it's written down." I've been talking about this for a month. I guess It's time to go on my first run. Thanks.

Current weight - 256
Target- 210
Training - eliptical, weights, Running once my weight is down 25 (football knees) limit my calorie intake
Goals - got to pack an elk out this fall need I say more.

03-27-2011, 08:09 AM
Current weight 248
Goal weight - under 220
Training - I spend alot of hours on horseback working which helps build leg muscle and core strength. Also I've been heading out with a 43lb pack walking 3-4 miles through the steepest country around, trying to hit all the rocky sidehills to strengthen my ankles every other day. On my 6th week of doing it currently. I also pick out a rock at unknown range while winded and shoot one shot each trip, concentrating on making it perfect. I work on getting the rifle out of the eberlestock and on target quick and smooth using a bipod, pack, or improvised rest. Also I shoot my 22 or centerfire rifles 3-5 days per week all year. I don't want work my tail off to get a shot only to miss or worse cripple game.
Goals - I will be 32 this summer and can't just rely on youth and effort to get around in the mountains anymore, so I need to make changes to keep tough hunts enjoyable. My goal is to be able to keep up with the guy I elk hunt with, a feat very few have ever accomplished.

My biggest challenge is that I seem to have a much easier time gaining muscle than losing fat. Since starting my walking routine I have gained 8lbs. I am getting more fit and the hills are getting easier, but I really don't want to gain alot of muscle just lose the gut and tone up.

Current weigh 189
Goal weight 170
Fitness goal is to be walk able to walk 2 miles every other day and race my dirt bike in the two hour Hare Scramble races
I can't run any (bad ankles) so bicycle/motorcycle riding, pushups, setups, NordicTrack, Schwinn Airdyne but I really need stair stepper. I use the stairs when in Colorado. I started a motorcycle race since turning 70 and was able to go fairly well. I didnt finish because of seat cover. Temp was well over 100 at race time. Less than a year since open heart surgery. Farm work is helping me get in shape. Diet is only good foods.

Already started, slow going though.

Got back into running after many years off.

started at about 200lbs, went up to 205, currently 199, really want to be 180/185 by september.

once I'm able to finally run 3-4 days/week I'm sure the weight will drop off more quickly.

would like to join a gym and rock climb and maybe even swim, but looked into a gym and not willing to pay that just yet, so may wait a month to see the new deals...

main reason with running besides enjoying it and wanting to get faster, is simply drop weight and greatly increase my endurance.

Trying to drink a lot more water. Made a list of the top 50 foods and I am trying to only eat those foods, well maybe some ice cream once in a while

I'm 6'-3" and was up to 180#. I just lost 7# helping my son put a swamp cooler in his house, crawling in attic and working on asphalt shingles in 100 degree heat. Now at 173, I can get to 170 pretty easy and will probably be at 168 before the season. I was blessed with the " skinny genes" and it is finally paying off now because in high school it wasnt real trendy to be 6'-3" 155#. I just have to watch the size of my stomach because that is where it goes first.
